TV-Series
Description
Kenneth Drayden, who operates in the LINK VRAINS cyberspace under the alias The Shepherd or Blood Shepherd, is a character introduced in the second season of the series. Originally a major antagonist, he later transitions into a supporting role. His Japanese name is Kengo Dojun, and his Western name, Kenneth Drayden, appears in adapted versions.

Kenneth's backstory is defined by a deep personal tragedy that fuels his worldview. In his youth, he was a driven and compassionate person who deeply cherished his mother and resented his father for abandoning the family. After completing his education, he took his mother out for her birthday. On their way home, they rode in a new taxi controlled by artificial intelligence. The AI malfunctioned, causing the vehicle to crash into the site of a prior accident. Kenneth lost his right arm in the crash, which was later replaced with a silver prosthetic, and gained a scar on the right side of his face. More devastatingly, his mother suffered severe spinal cord damage, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down. This incident instilled in Kenneth an intense and obsessive hatred for artificial intelligence, which he believes must always be controlled by humans and never trusted.

As a result of this trauma, Kenneth developed a ruthless and pragmatic personality. In his work as a bounty hunter, he is a consummate professional who prioritizes monetary gain and efficiency over personal attachments. He is willing to use deceptive tactics, such as lying about his cards' effects or employing surprise attacks, to achieve his goals. He often uses a count of three to lull opponents into a false sense of security before striking. While he is a lone wolf who prefers to work independently, he is highly effective and known for never letting a target escape. His methods can be unethical, as he has no issue using allies as bait if it serves his mission. However, he is not without a code, as he once rescued his half-sister from danger during a mission. Despite his cold exterior, he harbors a protective instinct for his half-sister, Emma Bessho, known in LINK VRAINS as Ghost Gal. This connection is one of the few chinks in his armor, and his actions in the conflict surrounding the Ignis are ultimately motivated by a desire to keep her safe.

Kenneth's role in the story begins when he is hired by SOL Technologies to hunt down the protagonist, Playmaker, and his AI partner, Ai. As The Shepherd, he is a formidable adversary who uses his skills to track and pressure the main characters. He serves as a primary obstacle for Playmaker and his ally Soulburner during their search for the other Ignis. His personal vendetta against AI drives him to pursue the Ignis with lethal intent. Over time, his motivations shift from a hired mission to a personal crusade, and eventually to a protective one after he learns SOL Technologies' true intentions for the captured Ignis. By the third season, he has tempered his lone wolf tendencies, becoming a reluctant ally to Playmaker and the Knights of Hanoi in facing a new threat.

In terms of abilities, The Shepherd is a highly skilled Duelist who uses a Drone Deck. His strategy focuses on swarming the field with Drone monsters and tokens to perform powerful combinations, often aiming for a One-Turn Kill through direct attacks and effect damage. His signature Skill is Drone Craft Force, which lowers the attack points of opposing monsters. Outside of dueling, his prosthetic arm grants him unique powers within LINK VRAINS. He can fire energy blasts from his palm, but his most notable ability is deleting a user's avatar entirely by grabbing them, causing their digital form to convulse and dissolve. He is shown to be pragmatic in his dueling, modifying his own AI assistant to lie about his card effects and exploiting opponents' psychological weaknesses, such as using a specific card to trigger Soulburner's past trauma.
