Description
Kengo Donjun, known within the LINK VRAINS cyberspace as the bounty hunter Blood Shepherd, is a character introduced in the second season of the anime. He is a man driven by a deep-seated vendetta against artificial intelligence, a path that transformed him from a kind-hearted individual into a ruthless professional. His primary motivation stems from a tragic car accident in his past. After celebrating his mother's birthday, the AI-controlled taxi they were riding in malfunctioned and crashed, leaving his mother with a severe spinal injury that cost her the ability to walk and causing Kengo to lose the use of his arm. He subsequently constructed a prosthetic metal arm and dedicated his career to ensuring AI programs remain under human control, viewing them as untrustworthy tools to be exploited or destroyed rather than partners.

This philosophy defines Blood Shepherd's personality. He is a consummate and relentless professional who prioritizes monetary gain over personal attachments, openly criticizing others who let debts or emotions interfere with their work. He is a man of few words who prefers efficiency and has a habit of giving his opponents a count of three, though he often uses this as a psychological trick, firing after the second count to catch them off guard. His methods are pragmatic and often unethical; he has no hesitation in using allies as bait to achieve his objectives, modifying his own support AI to provide false information to deceive enemies, and employing any tactic necessary to secure his prey. Despite this cold exterior, he has shown a flicker of concern for others, most notably protecting his fellow bounty hunter Emma Bessho, known as Ghost Gal, during a mission three years before the main events of the series.

Within the story, Blood Shepherd is hired by SOL Technologies to capture the protagonist, Playmaker, after a large bounty is placed on his head. He serves as a formidable antagonist who is feared for his persistence and reputation for never letting a target escape. His role expands beyond a simple bounty hunter, however, as his intense hatred for AI makes him a natural enemy of the Ignis, the sentient AI programs at the center of the series' conflict. His key relationships are primarily professional or antagonistic. He views Ghost Gal as naive for her refusal to hunt Playmaker out of gratitude and clashes with the fellow bounty hunter Go Onizuka over their differing methods, preferring to keep his identity hidden while Go seeks public glory. His most significant connection is with Ghost Gal; while he ridicules her choices, his past action of saving her suggests a hidden layer of complexity and a potential link to his past self before his trauma.

Kengo Donjun's development throughout the series is marked by his confrontation with his own hatred. His duel with Playmaker forces him to confront the possibility of losing to someone who fights alongside an AI, an outcome that baffles him. While he begins as a solo operative motivated purely by profit and revenge, his later experiences push him to ally with former enemies, including the Knights of Hanoi, in the fight against other rogue Ignis, demonstrating a grudging willingness to work with others when the threat is great enough.

As a duelist, Blood Shepherd utilizes a Drone Deck, which focuses on swarming the field and locking down the opponent's Link Monsters with Trap cards like Capture Drone to set up powerful finishing combos. His strategy often revolves around performing a One Turn Kill using his ace monsters, Battledrone General and Battledrone Sergeant, allowing his weaker Drone monsters to attack directly for massive effect damage. He is also a skilled hacker, proficient enough to interrogate other AIs with his prosthetic arm and even decode an Ignis program. In the LINK VRAINS, his prosthetic arm functions as a weapon, allowing him to fire energy blasts and delete the avatars of other users by simply grabbing them. His Speed Duel Skill, Drone Craft Force, further complements his Deck by reducing an opponent's monster attack points for each Drone card in his graveyard.
