Description
Aso, who operates within the LINK VRAINS cyberspace under the alias Faust, is a significant antagonist in the Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS anime, serving as one of the three Commanders and a Lieutenant of the Knights of Hanoi. His history is deeply intertwined with the core tragedy of the series, as he was originally one of the key assistants to Dr. Kiyoshi Kogami. A decade before the main story, Faust helped plan and execute the secretive Hanoi Project, an experiment that involved kidnapping children to create six advanced artificial intelligences known as the Ignis. When SOL Technologies attempted to cover up the project by infecting Dr. Kogami with a lethal computer virus, Faust and his colleagues helped recreate the doctor's consciousness within the network. Out of loyalty to this digital specter and his son, Revolver, Faust has since dedicated himself to the Knights of Hanoi's ultimate mission: the complete acquisition and destruction of all Ignis, whom they view as a threat to humanity.
In terms of personality, Faust embodies the contradictions of the Knights of Hanoi's inner circle. He is portrayed as a ruthless and methodical individual who is willing to employ extreme measures to achieve his goals, such as holding innocent people hostage and infecting duelists with the Another virus to lure out his targets. He is fiercely loyal to his leader, Revolver, and is diligent in carrying out the late Dr. Kogami's ambitions. Despite this cruelty, he is not entirely devoid of sympathy. Faust shows a degree of mercy, as seen when he releases the captured Naoki Shima after a lost duel. Furthermore, he and his comrade Baira expressed genuine remorse while witnessing the suffering of the children involved in the Lost Incident years ago, suggesting a conflicted past and a hint of conscience beneath his cold exterior.
Faust's primary role in the story is as a high-ranking enforcer for the Knights of Hanoi, particularly during the series' first season. He is the strategic mind behind the Another Incident, a cyber-terrorist attack that infected many duelists to pressure the protagonist, Playmaker, into revealing himself. After his fellow commanders, Dr. Genome and Baira, are defeated, Faust takes direct action. He personally stalks and kidnaps Naoki Shima, a classmate of Playmaker's real-life identity, using him as bait to force a confrontation. This leads to his most notable duel against Playmaker, where he seeks to capture the Ignis Ai. Even in defeat, Faust's resolve remains unshaken, and he attempts to warn Playmaker that protecting the Ignis may doom humanity's future.
Faust's key relationships are primarily within the Knights of Hanoi. He operates as a trusted lieutenant to Revolver, carrying out his orders without question. He works closely and effectively alongside his fellow commanders, Baira and Dr. Genome, with whom he shares a long history from their days as Dr. Kogami's assistants. Together, they are the original architects of the Hanoi Project. His relationship with the protagonist, Yusaku Fujita (Playmaker), is strictly adversarial, defined by their ideological clash over the nature and fate of the Ignis.
Throughout the series, Faust undergoes a degree of development primarily seen in his shifting role. Initially a primary antagonist, he and the other commanders are purged and fall into comas following their defeats by Playmaker and his allies. In the second season, he is restored and continues to serve Revolver, but the Knights of Hanoi's role changes from active aggressors to a more cautious third party. Faust participates in operations to rescue their comrade Baira from prison and engages in the war against the rogue Ignis, Lightning, fighting alongside his leader once more. This transition shows his adaptability and continued loyalty, but his core beliefs about the danger of artificial intelligences remain unchanged.
In combat, Faust is a formidable and tactical duelist. He utilizes a Motor Worm Deck, a strategy focused on manipulating the game state by forcibly changing the opponent's monsters into Insect-types. This disruptive approach allows him to power up his own monsters and lock down the opponent's options using continuous spell cards. His signature ace monster is Motor Worm Spread Queen. In Speed Duels, Faust possesses a unique Skill called Double Bite, which permits one of his Insect-type monsters to attack twice during the same Battle Phase, allowing him to inflict massive damage in a single turn.
