Description
Aoi Zaizen leads a double life, presenting two very different faces to the world. In the real world, she is a sixteen-year-old high school student who comes across as quiet, polite, and reserved. This stoic demeanor masks a deep-seated insecurity; she is distrustful of others, believing most people only approach her to gain favor with her older step-brother, Akira Zaizen, who holds an executive position at the powerful SOL Technologies company. This suspicion stems from a lonely childhood, as she and Akira became step-siblings after their parents married, only for both parents to die in a car accident not long after. This tragedy left the two of them to rely on one another.

Within the virtual reality world of LINK VRAINS, Aoi escapes her solitary reality by becoming the celebrated Charisma Duelist known as Blue Angel. In stark contrast to her real-life persona, Blue Angel is a bubbly, smiling idol with a cheerful and energetic demeanor. Her avatar is designed to match this persona, featuring long blue hair tied into twin tails, a green clover tattoo on her cheek, and a pair of large white wings adorned with heart and clover patterns. This virtual identity is more than just a performance; it is an embodiment of her desire to be a hero, inspired by a childhood story her brother would read to her about a lonely blue angel who found happiness.

Aoi's primary motivation throughout much of her journey is to gain the recognition and approval of her overprotective step-brother, Akira. She duels as Blue Angel to prove that she is strong, independent, and capable of handling things on her own, wanting to show him that she does not need to be constantly sheltered. This desire for validation drives her initial actions, including her public challenge to the mysterious duelist Playmaker. However, her role in the story evolves significantly. After being manipulated by the Knights of Hanoi and used as a pawn in a dangerous scheme, she becomes more deeply entangled in the main conflict, personally experiencing the threat the group poses.

Her key relationships are central to her development. Her bond with Akira is complex; while she is very loyal to him, she resents his overbearing nature and his attempts to make her quit dueling for her safety. Her dynamic with Yusaku Fujiki, who is her classmate in reality and the duelist Playmaker in LINK VRAINS, is also significant. Initially grateful to Playmaker for saving her, she also sees him as a rival she wishes to defeat. Her real-life interactions with Yusaku are awkward, as she initially suspects him of only talking to her for her connections, not realizing he is the person behind Playmaker's mask.

Aoi undergoes considerable character development throughout the series, which is visually represented by changes to her avatar. After a traumatic defeat and being infected with a virus by the Knight of Hanoi known as Specter, she briefly abandons her Blue Angel persona. She later returns as Blue Girl, a modified version of her original avatar, sporting a new hairstyle and outfit that reflects her hardened resolve. Her evolution culminates when she partners with the water Ignis, Aqua, and transforms into Blue Maiden, finally fighting for a cause greater than personal validation and becoming a true heroine in her own right.

As a duelist, Aoi is highly skilled and uses a strategy focused on effect damage and controlling the field. Her primary deck, used as both Blue Angel and Blue Girl, is the Trickstar archetype, which consists of fairy-like monsters named after flowers. The Trickstar strategy often involves burning the opponent's life points for every card they draw or play, wearing them down through a thousand small cuts rather than one massive attack. Later, as Blue Maiden, she switches to a Marincess deck, a series of water-based cyberse monsters that focus on swarming the field and powerful combo plays. Within LINK VRAINS, her avatar also possesses the ability to manifest a whip of blue energy, which she can use as a tool in the virtual space.
