Description
Liontari is an Apátheia soldier serving the Allied Empire in the world of Children of the Whales. He is distinguished by his brown skin, bright golden eyes, and vivid pink hair that reaches his jawline. As a child, during his first pilgrimage to a Nous, he claimed that something flowed into him, granting him the ability to perceive the emotions of others. This experience led to ostracization by the other children and likely contributed to his profound emotional instability as an adult. Despite being an Apátheia—a type of soldier expected to suppress emotion—Liontari displays an excess of feeling, taking evident joy in slaughter and bloodshed.

He and Lykos once lived in the same city and were apparently friends. Liontari eventually flunked out of the military academy due to his incompatibility with the Nous and was transferred through multiple military units until he wound up in the Faleina extermination unit. He later becomes part of the Falau Extermination Unit led by Orca, Lykos’s brother, and participates in the first attack on the Mud Whale. During the assault, he revels in the carnage and attempts to kill the boy Chakuro, only to be stopped by Lykos. His role in the story is that of a violent, emotionally charged antagonist whose actions highlight the crueler aspects of the Allied Empire’s military. His key relationship with Lykos is marked by a shared past that stands in tension with his current brutality. In terms of development, his traumatic childhood and unique empathic sensitivity suggest an underlying sadness and rejection that fuels his aggressive behavior, though the anime leaves much of his deeper growth to the manga. His notable abilities include the use of thymia—the supernatural power common among the Marked—and the rare, disturbing skill of sensing others’ emotions, which he gained through his early contact with a Nous. Liontari remains a complex figure whose instability and love of violence serve as a dark mirror to the more empathetic characters of the series.
