Description
In Hōzuki no Reitetsu, Karauri is a supporting character who works as a rookie second-class jailer stationed in the Sanjiva Hell division. He is a young demon, often appearing alongside his partner and best friend Nasubi. Karauri belongs to an imp-like race, which gives him the appearance of a small child or young teenager despite being a young adult in demon terms.
Personality-wise, Karauri is characterized by his diligence, strong work ethic, and grounded judgment. He frequently serves as the straight man to his easygoing and eccentric partner Nasubi, often having to clean up the messes caused by Nasubi's carefree and ditzy attitude. Unlike Nasubi, who can be oblivious and straightforward in a childish manner, Karauri is more serious and responsible, though he can become easily flustered, particularly when matters of romance arise. Despite his composed exterior, he harbors a secret masochistic side, as he is revealed to secretly enjoy the idea of being tortured by an attractive woman, specifically his crush Oko.
Karauri's primary motivation revolves around his admiration for his supervisor, Hozuki, the chief of staff to King Enma, and his desire to be closer to the demoness Oko, who works in Mortal Hell. He harbors a significant crush on Oko, often referred to as Oko-nee, and the mere mention of romance or her name is enough to send him into a blushing panic. This crush is a recurring aspect of his character, to the point where he considers requesting a transfer to the Mortal Hell division specifically to be nearer to her. His role in the story is that of a supporting jailer who, along with Nasubi, provides comic relief and a relatable, grounded perspective on the often absurd workings of the Japanese underworld. He is one of the more prominent younger demons learning the ropes under Hozuki's strict supervision.
Key relationships define much of Karauri's screen time. His constant companionship with Nasubi forms a classic comedic duo, with Karauri as the exasperated straight man to Nasubi's unpredictable antics. He greatly admires Hozuki, looking up to him as an effective and capable superior. His unrequited feelings for Oko are a central gag, highlighting his wholesome yet secretly perverse nature. In terms of development, Karauri does not undergo a dramatic transformation but rather exists as a consistent comedic element, with his hidden masochistic tendencies being revealed as a notable facet of his personality rather than a change over time. Regarding notable abilities, Karauri does not possess any special powers or combat skills that are highlighted; his primary functions are his reliability as a jailer, his role as the voice of reason in his partnership, and his capacity for getting flustered in romantic or embarrassing situations.
