Description
Kuroumaru Tokisaka is a former member of a clan of Immortal Hunters known as the Yatagarasu, a tribe of demi-humans whose children are born without a fixed sex and traditionally choose their gender at the age of sixteen. Trained from an early age in the Shinmei-ryū style of swordsmanship, Kuroumaru initially carried out missions against immortals according to the clan's wishes, though the clan regarded the character's own undying body as a disgrace. After an encounter with Tōta Konoe, Kuroumaru abandons the role of hunter and instead joins the secret society of immortals called UQ Holder, receiving the designation Number 11.
Kuroumaru displays a kind and easygoing personality, forming friendships quickly despite a background of poor treatment from the clan. Early in the story, Kuroumaru is motivated by a deep loyalty to the clan's commands, but that motivation shifts toward protecting Tōta and finding a personal place within UQ Holder. The relationship with Tōta Konoe becomes the central bond: Kuroumaru develops romantic feelings that are initially misunderstood when Tōta casually claims to love everyone, leading Kuroumaru to question whether to choose a female body at the coming-of-age ceremony in order to be seen as a romantic partner. Over time, Kuroumaru resolves that the true desire is not to change for someone else's expectations but to become strong enough to stand by Tōta's side as a protector, regardless of gender. This realization marks the key emotional development, reinforcing a commitment to self-identity and to the partnership with Tōta.
Notable abilities include mastery of the Shinmei-ryū sword style, enhanced by demi-human physical traits and a powerful form of immortality that grants exceptional regeneration. Kuroumaru can perform the secret technique True Thunderlight Sword, in which lightning is infused into the blade and launched as an enormous sphere of lightning, causing a large explosion. These combat skills, combined with unwavering loyalty, make Kuroumaru a vital member of UQ Holder and a close companion to the protagonist.
