Description
Karin Yuuki, also known as the Saintess of Steel, is a member of the immortal organization UQ Holder, designated as Number 4. Her existence is defined by an ancient past and a form of immortality that is both a divine curse and an act of love. Originally known as Judas Iscariot, her identity is rooted in a profound betrayal from the 1st century, having sold out a holy figure she revered for thirty pieces of silver. This act resulted in her being cursed with immortality, a punishment from God that ensures she can never be harmed or killed, though she can still feel physical pain. Her immortality is ranked at the highest level, S, making her effectively invincible; she does not need to eat, drink, or breathe, and will survive being buried underground or stranded in the vacuum of space. Around the year 1492 in a Southern European village, she was persecuted as a witch, but it was during this period that Evangeline A.K. McDowell, also known as Yukihime, saved her.
This rescue forged an intense and unwavering loyalty in Karin. She holds a deep, fanatical admiration for Yukihime, referring to her with reverence and becoming almost single-mindedly fixated when the subject involves her savior. This devotion is the central pillar of her personality and motivations, driving her to join and serve within UQ Holder. Because of her closeness to Yukihime, Karin initially views the protagonist, Touta Konoe, with open disdain and hostility, resenting the intimate bond he shares with her master. She is often curt, blunt, and maintains a stoic, hard-to-read poker face, rarely betraying her emotions. Beneath this cold exterior, however, she possesses a softer, more compassionate side, showing genuine care for vulnerable children and expressing regret over the tragic fates of others.
Karin’s role within the story is that of a senior operative and a powerful combatant. She frequently accompanies younger members like Touta and Kuroumaru Tokisaka on dangerous missions, acting as a strict and often critical, but reliable, ally. Her relationships evolve significantly over time. Her initial hatred for Touta gradually gives way to a complex dynamic of grudging respect and, eventually, deep romantic affection. This shift is particularly noticeable after a failed pactio ritual with Yukihime leads her to confide in Touta about her shameful past as Judas, after which they successfully form a pactio contract. Her feelings culminate in a confession of love after she endures forty-five years of utter isolation in space, thinking only of him. With Kuroumaru, she maintains a calmer, more supportive friendship, even expressing a wish that they choose to become female to be with Touta.
Karin’s abilities are formidable, centered on her absolute defense. Her curse, the Divine Curse of Inviolability, makes her completely impervious to physical harm. She wields a long hammer and a sword, and is highly skilled in swordsmanship and the movement technique Shundō. She can also manipulate light magic and divine power for various techniques. Her Nimbus Holy Light shrouds her in a purifying aura, while her Holy Fist channels her curse into a powerful punch. She possesses purification techniques – a Purification Fist and Purification Blade – specifically designed to harm spiritual entities like wraiths. Her advanced magical abilities include creating shields of angelic wings and summoning barrages of explosive swords. Through her pactio with Touta, she gains the artifact Sanctus Lucifer. Her character arc transforms her from a guilt-ridden immortal, who sees her state as an unforgivable punishment, into someone who finds a new purpose and connection, gradually learning to value her eternal existence alongside her newfound comrades.
