Description
Eleonore von Wittenburg is a central antagonist from the visual novel Dies irae, where she serves as a high-ranking member of the Longinus Dreizehn Orden, the thirteen elite commanders of Reinhard Tristan Eugen Heydrich. She occupies Seat IX at the Black Round Table and holds the demonic name Samiel Zentaur. As the most loyal and fervent subordinate to Reinhard, she is one of the Three Knights, known as Einherjar Rubedo, and plays an essential role in the completion of the Transmutation of Gold.

In terms of appearance, Eleonore is a tall and slim woman standing approximately 180 centimeters in height, with a pale complexion that bears permanent burn scars on her face, neck, left arm, waist, and left leg. These scars are a testament to an incident in 1942 when her then-incomplete Beri'ah raged out of control. She has deep violet or red eyes and very long claret-colored hair, which she typically styles in a ponytail with a hair tie. Her attire generally consists of a military uniform accented with an armband, belt, gloves, and knee-high boots, often complemented by a trench coat. She is rarely seen without a cigar, and her demeanour is consistently cold, stern, and sharp-tongued.

Personality-wise, Eleonore is defined by absolute, unwavering loyalty to Reinhard Heydrich. Her entire being is oriented toward his will and the glory of his Valhalla. This devotion manifests as a fierce, commanding, and often short-tempered disposition. She is ruthless in combat and in judgment, viewing those who disrespect Heydrich or who lack conviction as worthless. Despite her harsh exterior and frequent use of insults toward her allies, there are glimmers of a complex sense of respect and even a harsh form of affection for those she considers her comrades, such as Beatrice Waltrud von Kircheisen. She is a strict disciplinarian who believes in action and results, showing little patience for what she perceives as the hypocrisy or self-condemnation of other members of the Order. Her motivation is not power for its own sake, but rather the desire to burn eternally in the glow of gold, serving her master as a purifying flame that cleanses all impurity.

As a key figure in the Longinus Dreizehn Orden, Eleonore acts as one of Reinhard’s primary enforcers. Her role in the story often involves testing the mettle of opponents and allies alike, particularly the protagonist, Ren Fujii. She arrives to evaluate whether he is worthy of facing Reinhard, engaging him in combat to gauge his potential. During these encounters, she initially holds back to assess his abilities but escalates quickly when disappointed. She is also a shrewd tactician who orchestrates events from behind the scenes, manipulating situations to ensure that the resurrection of her master proceeds without issue. Her actions are not random acts of violence but calculated steps in a grand plan, demonstrating a sharp, strategic mind.

One of her most significant relationships is with Beatrice Waltrud von Kircheisen. Despite their constant bickering and the fact that they are polar opposites, there is a deep, if grudging, mutual respect between them. Eleonore refers to Beatrice as a ‘dimwit’ but does so with an undercurrent of familiarity and even affection. Their history dates back to their time as soldiers in 1939, where they fought together and were later transferred to work under the Gestapo. This long history creates a bond where they can challenge each other in a way Eleonore would never tolerate from anyone else. Above all else, her relationship with Reinhard Heydrich is the cornerstone of her existence. Her loyalty to him is absolute and forms the unshakeable foundation of her identity and power.

Throughout the narrative, Eleonore undergoes a transformation from a high-ranking commander to a full-fledged Einherjar and one of the Three Knights, solidifying her status as a physical and spiritual cornerstone of Reinhard’s legion. Her development includes a past failure where her incomplete Beri'ah caused her severe burns, an event that only hardened her resolve and cooled her demeanor further. As an Einherjar, she transcends the concept of death, existing as an immortal being who can regenerate as long as Reinhard Heydrich exists.

Eleonore possesses a range of formidable abilities rooted in the magic system of Die Ewigkeit. Her Holy Relic is Der Freischutz Samiel, a World War II-era railgun tank that she can also manifest in various other firearm forms such as grenades and rifles, which launch projectiles with explosive force exceeding that of nuclear warheads. Her true power lies in her Beri'ah, a reality-warping ability that imposes her deepest craving upon the world. Known as Muspellheim Lævateinn, its incomplete form creates flames that expand infinitely, chasing a target across any distance and burning not just the body but the very soul, bypassing any resistance to fire or heat. The complete form of her Beri'ah is even more devastating, transporting both Eleonore and her opponent into an inescapable dimension of endless hellfire contained within the barrel of her cannon. Within this realm, she can also utilize her Holy Relic, making it a trap from which escape is nearly impossible without the ability to teleport across dimensions.
