Description
Couronne Dola is a central human figure from the era of the Great War, as depicted in the story of No Game No Life Zero. She is a member of a small community of human survivors and is the self-proclaimed adoptive older sister of its leader, Riku Dola, insisting he call her nee-san to reaffirm their bond after he lost his own family. Visually, Couronne bears a strong resemblance to her distant descendant, Stephanie Dola, though her hair is slightly longer and darker in color. She typically wears a yellow, white, and brown outfit and is often seen with aviator goggles on her head.
Her personality is defined by a blend of profound intelligence, unwavering optimism, and a playful, teasing nature. Even amidst the despair of a world-ending war, Couronne constantly smiles and maintains an unshakable hope that the conflict will eventually end. She is exceptionally observant and empathetic, allowing her to perceive truths that others miss, yet she possesses the wisdom and restraint to act on them without causing chaos. In her private moments, she shows a caring and sometimes scolding side to Riku, yelling at him for recklessly damaging his body with black ash but also hugging him for comfort in times of loss. She is also quite playful, occasionally making joking, sometimes suggestive, remarks to lighten the mood or tease Riku.
Couronne claims to be the surviving royalty of a fallen kingdom, a background that lends credibility to her natural leadership and technical acumen. Her primary motivation is the survival and future prosperity of humanity. She acts as a key pillar of the settlement, using her sharp observational skills to identify the value of non-functional magical artifacts, such as a long-distance telescope made by the Dwarves, and using her considerable technical knowledge to modify it into a working, manual device without the use of spirits. Her intelligence is so remarkable that she is able to grasp the complex mechanism of the Star Grail immediately after it is explained to her.
In the story, Couronne’s role is that of a steadfast supporter, secret-keeper, and eventual leader. She is one of the few people who instantly recognizes that Schwi, the Ex-machina who joins their group, is not human. However, her deep and absolute trust in Riku’s judgment leads her to keep this secret, protecting the harmony of the community without interference. She officiates the secret wedding between Riku and Schwi, and since official documentation could not be left behind, she engraves their three names—Riku, Schwi, and her own—onto the back of a jewel that has been passed down through her family, solidifying their bond for eternity. When Riku departs to enact his plan to end the Great War, Couronne takes full responsibility for leading the human settlement.
Following the end of the Great War and Riku’s death, Couronne becomes a legendary historical figure. She founds the kingdom of Elchea and becomes its first queen, successfully guiding the remnants of humanity into a new era of peace and reconstruction. Her legacy endures for millennia. In the present day, she is revered by her descendant, Stephanie Dola, as an ancestor and the pride of the Dola family, remembered as a talented and wise woman whom no one ever saw cry. The jewel she engraved becomes a treasured Dola family heirloom, and her title as the founder and first queen is a source of immense national pride for the kingdom of Elchea.
