Description
Mana Hayashida is the second Witch encountered by Haruto Tsukishiro in the dream world of the anime 18if. Her backstory is rooted in a tragic event from her childhood: when she was twelve years old, her family was brutally murdered in their home by three teenagers. Because the perpetrators were minors at the time, they received light sentences and were eventually released. This unresolved trauma and the failure of the justice system to adequately punish the killers became the driving force behind Mana’s transformation. Unable to move on, she became a Witch and entered the dream world, where she began hunting the three murderers. By the time Haruto meets her, she has already killed two of them and is closing in on the third.
Mana’s personality is shaped by her consuming desire for vengeance. She is determined and unrelenting, treating the dream world as a hunting ground where she can finally exact the justice she feels was denied in the real world. Despite her cold and focused demeanor during her pursuit, she is not devoid of vulnerability. Her dedication to revenge reveals a deep wound and a refusal to let go of the past. The 12-year-old version of herself that appears in the dream world is a manifestation of her arrested emotional development, showing that she has been frozen in the moment of her greatest pain.
In the story, Mana serves as a supporting antagonist who ultimately finds resolution. When Haruto intervenes in her confrontation with the last killer and kills the murderer himself, Mana’s quest ends. She is able to leave the dream world and return to reality, finally freed from the cycle of vengeance. Later in the series, she reappears alongside other Witches to help convince the character Eve not to destroy the world and instead return to Heaven. When Haruto chooses to leave with Eve, Mana and the other Witches bid him farewell, demonstrating that she has regained a sense of connection and compassion.
Mana does not display overt supernatural abilities beyond the general powers of a Witch in the dream world. Her primary ability is her capacity to manifest within the dream realm and track her targets. As a Witch, she can also be killed within the dream world if she is defeated, though in her case she survives thanks to Haruto’s aid. Her strength lies not in combat prowess but in her unwavering will and her ability to hold onto her purpose across the years she spent in the dream world.
Her key relationships are with the three murderers, whom she relentlessly hunts; with Haruto Tsukishiro, who becomes her savior and the one who finally ends her quest; and with the other Witches, with whom she later stands in solidarity. Her development moves from a single-minded avenger to a person who can let go of her past, thanks to Haruto’s intervention, and who can later extend empathy and support to others in need.
