Description
The Master is the owner and head chef of the Western Restaurant Nekoya, a position he inherited from his grandfather ten years before the story begins. The restaurant has a unique tradition: on Saturdays, its doors open to another world populated by elves, dragons, demons, and other fantastical beings, who visit to enjoy modern Earth-style cuisine. The Master’s grandmother, Koyomi, was a hero from that other world, giving his family a deep connection to the interdimensional door. He is a highly skilled culinary professional who approaches his work with calm dedication and a strong sense of responsibility. He views the restaurant as a neutral ground where all customers, regardless of their status, race, or background, are treated with equal respect and warmth. His personality is reserved yet kind; he is not talkative but consistently welcomes guests with a gentle demeanor and a focus on providing excellent service. His primary motivation is to maintain the quality and tradition of the restaurant, honoring his grandfather’s legacy while ensuring that every patron leaves satisfied. In his role as proprietor, he also acts as an employer and mentor to the waitresses Aletta, a demon girl he hired after she stumbled into the restaurant, and Kuro, an ancient black dragon who later joins the staff. The Master maintains respectful long-term relationships with regular patrons such as Artorius, an archmage who orders roast beef, and Red, a fire dragon who favors beef stew. He often remembers each customer’s preferred dish and prepares it without needing to be asked, demonstrating remarkable attention to detail. Over the course of the series, the Master’s development is shown through his growing awareness of the profound impact his cooking has on his otherworldly clientele—offering comfort, joy, and even salvation—and his deepening appreciation for his grandfather’s work. His notable abilities include exceptional culinary skills across a wide range of Western and Japanese dishes, a keen memory for customer preferences, and the ability to maintain order and a peaceful atmosphere within the restaurant, even when powerful or dangerous beings from the other world are present. He remains an enigmatic figure, rarely speaking about his personal life, but his actions consistently reflect a quiet, principled dedication to his craft and to the sanctuary he provides.
