Description
Chie Hoshinomiya serves as the homeroom teacher for Class B at the Advanced Nurturing High School, a position she holds during the first and second-year arcs of the story. Standing at 155 centimeters with light brown hair and purple eyes, she presents a youthful and attractive appearance that complements her generally bright and approachable demeanor. Her role as a teacher is unusual in that she does not have a designated subject to teach, instead working as the school's health nurse in addition to her homeroom duties. Hoshinomiya is a graduate of the same institution, having been a student there thirteen years prior to the main story alongside her current colleagues Sae Chabashira and Tomonari Mashima. During her own time as a student, she began in Class D and, through class efforts, managed to elevate her class to Class B by her third year, though she ultimately failed to graduate from the top-ranked Class A.

On the surface, Hoshinomiya possesses a lively, friendly, and somewhat eccentric personality that makes her popular with her students. She frequently appears at school suffering from a hangover due to her love of drinking, and she often interacts with students in a casual, almost familiar manner that blurs the line between teacher and friend. Despite this cheerful and sometimes reckless facade, her true nature is far more calculating, cynical, and ruthless. She has a manipulative streak and a talent for hiding her genuine intentions behind a mask of bright smiles and flirtatious behavior, a trait that has drawn comparisons to her own student, Kikyo Kushida. Her private conversations during drinking gatherings with fellow teachers reveal a bitter and cynical side, where she has nonchalantly discussed using and discarding men in past relationships. This duality between her public persona and private ambitions is a core aspect of her character.

Hoshinomiya's actions and motivations are heavily driven by her past experiences as a student, particularly an event that has fostered a deep-seated vendetta against her colleague and former classmate, Sae Chabashira. During a crucial Unanimous Special Exam in their third year, Chabashira refused to vote for the expulsion of a fellow student, which was necessary for the class to gain the points needed to surpass Class A. As a result of this failure to reach a unanimous decision, Hoshinomiya’s class lost 300 class points, and their chance to graduate from Class A was permanently destroyed. Hoshinomiya has never forgiven Chabashira for this perceived betrayal, blaming her friend's emotional weakness for derailing the entire class's future. This resentment has since transformed into Hoshinomiya’s primary professional motivation: she returned to the school as a teacher specifically to prevent Chabashira from achieving the redemption she seeks by guiding her own class to Class A. This rivalry is a silent but potent force, and Hoshinomiya has resolved to use any means necessary to obstruct Chabashira’s success, even if it leads to the mutual destruction of both their classes.

Her role in the story centers on her management of Class B, initially under the leadership of the popular and kind-hearted Honami Ichinose. Hoshinomiya recognizes Ichinose’s intellectual potential and her ability to unite a class, but her expectations gradually sour as the class consistently underperforms and fails to close the gap with Class A. As the class's situation worsens, to the point of being demoted to Class C, Hoshinomiya becomes increasingly disillusioned and openly complains about Ichinose's leadership, even admitting she has given up hope on her students' ability to reach the top. Her frustration with her own class leads her to develop a keen interest in Kiyotaka Ayanokōji from Class D. Demonstrating her sharp insight, she is one of the few faculty members to recognize Ayanokōji’s hidden abilities early on, suspecting he is the true power driving Class D's rise. Hoshinomiya views Ayanokōji as a potential "Joker" who could single-handedly turn the tide for her struggling class, and she makes several attempts to recruit him. These attempts range from offering 20 million private points for his transfer to, in moments of desperation, resorting to more underhanded tactics, such as begging him to deliberately lose an exam or hinting at offering him personal favors. Her relationship with Ayanokōji is defined by her persistent, though unsuccessful, efforts to co-opt his talents, and he remains largely indifferent to her flirtatious and desperate advances.

Hoshinomiya has several key relationships that define her character. Her relationship with Sae Chabashira is the most significant, characterized by a one-sided friendship and deep, festering animosity. While Hoshinomiya claims them to be friends, Chabashira denies any such closeness and is frequently annoyed by her colleague's antics, though she remains largely unaware of the full depth of Hoshinomiya's vengeful feelings. Her relationship with Honami Ichinose is professionally crucial. Initially supportive, her attitude shifts to one of disappointment and distrust as Ichinose fails to deliver results, revealing Hoshinomiya's pragmatic and results-oriented nature. She is also close with Tomonari Mashima, the Class A homeroom teacher, who is considered her best friend; their relationship is comfortable enough to discuss personal matters like love interests without reservation. Regarding abilities, Hoshinomiya's primary skill is her sharp intuition and psychological insight. She is exceptionally adept at reading people and discerning hidden potential, as demonstrated by her early and accurate suspicion of Ayanokōji's capabilities despite his manufactured low profile. She is also a master of manipulation, capable of using her cheerful personality as a cover for calculated actions, such as secretly manipulating exam group assignments to observe Ayanokōji. Her tactical thinking is driven more by psychological warfare and strategic recruitment than by any direct physical or academic prowess, relying on her deep understanding of the school's system and the individuals within it to pursue her personal vendetta.
