Description
Benitoite is a supporting character in the gemstone-based world, known for being sensible, earnest, and somewhat easily drawn into the problems of others. With a hardness of 6.5 on the Mohs scale, Benitoite primarily serves in patrol duties, a common assignment for many gems responsible for defending against the Lunarians. They are also referred to simply as Benito.

In terms of personality, Benitoite is characterized by a difficulty in refusing requests for assistance, often getting caught up in the situations of those around them. This earnest nature is coupled with a degree of insecurity. While aware of Cinnabar's solitary and poisonous situation, Benitoite admits to feeling a sense of fear whenever Cinnabar is nearby. They can also be self-critical; after making a mistake during a mission, Benitoite is overcome with grief and embarrassment, worrying that others saw their failure and feeling they ruined the operation.

Benitoite's motivations are closely tied to their relationships, particularly with their partner, Neptunite. Feeling overshadowed by Neptunite, Benitoite expresses a desire to go to the moon, believing it to be a place where they could escape that dynamic and not be in their partner's shadow. This desire to leave for the moon becomes a significant personal motivation, one they initially ask to keep secret.

The relationship with Neptunite is the most defining in Benitoite's story. The two are often associated with each other, both being silicate minerals, and they share quarters. However, this partnership is fraught with unspoken tension. Benitoite finds it difficult to understand what Neptunite is thinking, a trait they later describe as condescending, and admits to never having liked this ambiguity. This underlying frustration comes to a head in a later conflict, where Benitoite loses control, inadvertently causing harm to both themselves and Neptunite.

Benitoite's role in the larger narrative involves being one of the gems who accompany the protagonist, Phosphophyllite, on a pivotal journey to the moon. Upon returning, Benitoite is among those who greet Phos, observing the changes that have occurred. Their development is subtle but notable, moving from a quietly insecure gem who keeps their thoughts to themselves to one who openly voices their frustrations with their partner, even if that confrontation leads to a violent conclusion.

Regarding notable abilities, as a gem, Benitoite possesses the standard traits of their kind, including a body composed of their namesake mineral. Like other gems, they can be equipped with a weapon to fight the Lunarians, though specific unique combat techniques are not highlighted for this character. Their primary contributions are through their patrol duties and their interpersonal dynamics with the other gems.
