Description
Goshenite is a supporting character in the gem-based world where this narrative takes place. Like all gems, Goshenite is referred to with they or them pronouns, though they present with a slim, youthful, feminine appearance characterized by gray hair cut to neck length and gray eyes.
Goshenite first appears early in the story alongside Morganite, to whom they are frequently paired as a partner. Initially, both serve as somewhat senior gems entrusted with combat duties, though their recklessness becomes immediately apparent. When a group of Lunarians appears, Goshenite and Morganite choose to engage the enemy without immediately reporting to their teacher, Kongo, believing they can handle the situation themselves. This overconfidence proves disastrous, as the Lunarians shatter them, and when Kongo arrives to rescue the others, he inadvertently finishes the destruction of their fragmented forms while obliterating the Lunarian threat.
Following this incident, Goshenite is eventually repaired and restored, returning as a new Goshenite. This version of the character continues to operate in close association with a new Morganite, and the pair express interest in accompanying Phosphophyllite, hoping to eventually meet the older versions of themselves that were lost. As the story progresses, Goshenite becomes part of the group of gems that follow Phos to the Moon, joining Diamond, Yellow Diamond, Benitoite, Amethyst, Alexandrite, and Cairngorm in this pivotal journey.
On the Moon, Goshenite continues to display a surprisingly casual and adaptable personality. They mention having spent time with a skater group and learning to skateboard, suggesting an openness to new experiences and a willingness to embrace the very different Lunarian environment rather than resisting it. This adaptability becomes most pronounced in the later stages of the narrative. When a machine designed to transform gems into Lunarians is completed and ready for testing, volunteers are needed. While Cairngorm offers themselves and Amethyst 84 suggests testing on someone less important first, Goshenite steps forward and enters the machine without hesitation. They successfully transform into a Lunarian, becoming the first gem to voluntarily undergo this conversion, and immediately confirm that the process is ready for use on others.
Before this transformation, Goshenite also demonstrates resourcefulness and loyalty. After Padparadscha awakens from hibernation, Goshenite helps them move around. More significantly, when Phos is being hunted by the other gems who seek to destroy them, Goshenite assists Padparadscha in creating a distraction that allows Phos to escape, helping the fugitive gem onto a ship and away from danger. This action reveals that Goshenite, despite having adapted to the Lunarian environment, retains complex allegiances and is willing to act against the majority to assist a former comrade.
In terms of abilities as a gem soldier, Goshenite is capable of fighting Lunarians with standard gem weaponry, including swords, and can withstand combat to the extent that their hardness allows. Like all gems, they can be shattered and later repaired, though the process may affect memory and continuity of self. Their most notable ability, however, is neither combat prowess nor hardness, but rather a kind of social and situational adaptability that allows them to navigate major shifts in allegiance and environment more easily than many of their peers. Goshenite transitions from an Earth-bound defender to a resident of the Moon, and ultimately from a gem person to a Lunarian, accepting each new phase with a notable lack of resistance. This flexibility makes Goshenite an intriguing figure, one whose surface-level casualness belies a capacity for decisive independent action and quiet assistance to those in need. Throughout all these changes, Goshenite remains consistently recognizable in temperament, demonstrating that transformation of body does not necessarily mean transformation of character.
