Description
Alexandrite is a gemstone character from the series Land of the Lustrous, distinguished by a hardness of 8.5 on the Mohs scale, which places them among the more durable members of their kind. Their primary official role within the community is that of the lead researcher and archivist concerning the Lunarians, the ethereal, moon-dwelling adversaries who frequently attack the gems to use them as decorations. Alexandrite is deeply devoted to collecting, analyzing, and cataloging every piece of data on these enemies, from their forms and behaviors to the number of components they possess. This dedication makes them the foremost expert on the subject, and other gems, including the protagonist Phosphophyllite, seek out Alexandrite for specialized knowledge that cannot be found elsewhere.

The driving force behind Alexandrite's obsessive research is not simple curiosity but a profound personal tragedy. In the past, their partner, a gem named Chrysoberyl, was taken by the Lunarians. Because gems are functionally immortal, the loss of a partner is an eternal wound, and Alexandrite's relentless study is a coping mechanism designed to preserve the "fresh feeling of hatred" against the beings responsible for that loss. This hatred is so potent that it triggers a unique and dangerous condition. When Alexandrite directly engages with or even just perceives a Lunarian, their mental state shifts dramatically. Their hair changes color from its usual shade to a deep red, and they enter a battle frenzy, becoming a single-minded and ferocious fighter. In this state, known as Red Alexandrite, they lose the capacity for verbal communication, expressing themselves only through loud war cries, and often lose consciousness once the threat is eliminated. This transformation is a direct reference to the real-world alexandrite gemstone's property of changing color under different light. To prevent this uncontrollable state, Master Kongo, the gems' enigmatic leader, has forbidden Alexandrite from interacting with Lunarians directly.

In the story, Alexandrite serves as a source of vital information and a representation of how the gems' immortality can lead to obsessive, unyielding fixations. Their personality is characterized by a diligent and intense focus on their work. They become notably excited when presented with new data, as seen when Phosphophyllite returns from a battle with detailed accounts of a new type of Lunarian. When Phosphophyllite seeks to relearn everything about the Lunarians to investigate Master Kongo's connection to them, Alexandrite enthusiastically conducts an all-night study session, quizzing Phos relentlessly while a tired Yellow Diamond rests nearby. This key relationship with Phosphophyllite is significant, as Alexandrite provides the foundational knowledge that fuels Phos's later, more dangerous investigations.

Throughout the narrative, Alexandrite undergoes a significant development, particularly in the manga's later chapters. After joining Phosphophyllite on a mission to the Moon, Alexandrite lives among the Lunarians for centuries. During this time, they wear a blindfold to prevent their hair from turning red at the sight of their former enemies, as their hatred has begun to erode after learning the Lunarians are not entirely evil. In a tragic reversal of their original condition, Alexandrite's trigger shifts; the very sight of the gems who remained on Earth becomes the catalyst for their destructive frenzy. During the final conflict, they remove their blindfold, and despite being restrained by a heavy shackle around their neck, they shatter most of the Earth-dwelling gems. This evolution highlights the story's theme of shifting allegiances and the cyclical nature of obsession and hatred.

Beyond their research and combat abilities, Alexandrite is noted for having a more personal side. They have a preference for being addressed with the endearing honorific "chan" rather than the more formal "san". In battle, their expertise and knowledge are invaluable, but their uncontrollable frenzy makes them a double-edged sword. Their abilities include a high level of combat proficiency, particularly in their red state, and an encyclopedic memory for Lunarian-related intelligence, which makes them a crucial asset for strategic planning against their species' ancient enemies.
