Description
Amethyst 84 is a Gem who was born as an identical twin alongside Amethyst 33, the two of them together being referred to as a singular existence split in two. As a twin Gem, Amethyst 84 possesses the unique physical property of not shattering or breaking when making physical contact with their partner, a phenomenon demonstrated when the two of them bash their heads together without injury. Amethyst 84 initially appears with a purple color scheme and wears the standard seasonal uniform of the Gems, with short hair styled into large braids that typically cover their right eye, a mirror to their twin who covers the left eye.
While on the land, Amethyst 84 works in perfect tandem with Amethyst 33, often speaking simultaneously or finishing each other's sentences. The pair rely heavily on one another, but beneath this cooperative surface, each twin secretly harbors a desire for more independence, motivated by a deep-seated fear that both could be captured by the Lunarians in a single encounter. Between the two, Amethyst 84 is described as the more confident and carefree of the pair, and when together they can become cocky and overconfident in their abilities. Despite this bravado, both twins remain caring individuals who tend to put the well-being of others before their own.
Amethyst 84 and their twin are both highly talented swordsmen, and their skill leads to them being recommended to train the younger Gem Phosphophyllite for a period. During this training, they enjoy teasing Phos by giving false alarms about Lunarian appearances or expressing astonishment at ordinary passing animals, though they do so from a place of playfulness rather than malice. When the twins are shattered by Lunarians and Phos is unable to fight back, they apologize to Phos and claim the fault is their own for being careless and trying to show off, demonstrating their tendency to take responsibility rather than assign blame. Later, after Phos gains new abilities and fights off the Lunarians single-handedly, both twins embrace Phos in admiration.
The relationship between Amethyst 84 and their twin Amethyst 33 is the most significant in their life. They are extremely close and act in coordination at all times, yet each secretly wishes for some degree of separation. The pair sometimes switch which eye their hair covers, a detail so subtle that even they occasionally lose track of who is who, and it is noted that nobody else notices when they swap places. This desire for independence ultimately drives Amethyst 84 to make a pivotal decision: when Phosphophyllite requires a Gem to accompany them to the Moon, the twins conspire to switch places, and Amethyst 84 goes in their twin's stead out of care for Amethyst 33, hoping to protect them from the danger of both being taken.
Following their arrival on the Moon, Amethyst 84 undergoes significant development as an individual. They become an assistant scientist to the Lunarian scientist Barbata, who acts as a mentor and teaches them about scientific research. Amethyst 84 shows particular interest in the psychological aspects of their new field, observing and noting that the majority of the Gems left on Earth have suffered untreated trauma. They begin to grow accustomed to life on the Moon and, by their own admission, find that they actually like it there. This period allows Amethyst 84 to develop a new sense of self separate from their identity as half of a pair. They also demonstrate considerable courage during this time, standing up to Phosphophyllite when Phos attempts to use blackmail against them.
After a significant time skip of 220 years, Amethyst 84 has changed their appearance dramatically, now sporting a shoulder-length medium bob cut with a hairband braid and wearing a loose-fitting lab coat with wide-legged pants and pointed-toe boots with stiletto heels. In this later period, Amethyst 84 takes on a more active scientific role, announcing to Prince Aechmea the completion of a machine capable of transforming Gems into Lunarians. When Cairngorm volunteers to be the first test subject, Amethyst 84 stops them, suggesting the machine should be tested on someone less important in case of an error, and offers themself up instead. Ultimately, Amethyst 84 undergoes this transformation and becomes a Lunarian, losing their distinctive purple coloration in the process. In their final role, Amethyst 84 helps explain the transformation process to other Gems and runs through the losses and gains of becoming a Lunarian, including the loss of their original color, hoping that others will also choose this path to end the fighting.
