Description
The Queen of Witches, also known as Ursula Bloodlord and referred to in some translations as the Witch Queen, is the longtime ruler of the Witches' Forest and is known as the mother of all witches. She is a tall woman with a slim build who wears a gothic dress and a wide-brimmed pointed hat, with teardrop-shaped markings beneath her eyes that give her a cold, imposing presence. She was born on November 3, stands 170 centimeters tall, and has blood type O. She has lived for hundreds of years, with accounts describing her as over five centuries old, and because of her long life she possesses exceptional knowledge of the world's magic, history, and ancient events, including the destruction of the elves and the coming of the demon god.
As a ruler, the Queen is cold, calculating, and intensely proud of her own power. She measures worth by magical strength and has little regard for those she considers weak or defective, including people born without magic. Her attitude toward the witches under her care is similarly detached, as she treats them as extensions of herself and is willing to confine or use them for her own purposes. Her central motivation is the pursuit of rare and extraordinary magic. She desires powers that would make her more complete, and she is especially drawn to abilities that defy normal rules, such as Asta's anti-magic and Vanessa's thread magic. She is also a highly accurate diviner, and her foresight heavily shapes her decisions, including her dealings with both Asta and Vanessa.
The Queen becomes a key figure during the crisis in the Witches' Forest. When Asta suffers a curse that ordinary healers cannot cure, Vanessa, who grew up in the forest, returns to ask for the Queen's help. The Queen initially refuses, but after the forest is invaded by forces from the Diamond Kingdom and the Eye of the Midnight Sun, she heals Asta's arms. Her aid is not purely generous, as she uses her blood on him and deliberately loosens the limits on his power in order to study his anti-magic and draw out the potential of his swords. Once the invasion is repelled, she attempts to take control of Asta and claim the anti-magic for herself, but Vanessa awakens her rare ability, the thread of fate, and overcomes the Queen's magic. The defeat forces the Queen to confront a power she could neither predict nor control, and she abandons her plans involving Asta and Vanessa.
Her relationship with Vanessa runs deeper than that of ruler and subject. Vanessa is her daughter, and the Queen imprisoned her in a cage during childhood because her divination indicated that Vanessa would one day possess the power to alter fate. Years later, Yami Sukehiro, then traveling as a trainee mage, broke Vanessa free, and the Queen allowed her to leave because she had foreseen that Vanessa would eventually return bearing something of great value. That prediction is fulfilled during the forest's crisis, and the two later come to an understanding. The Queen also has ties to other figures connected to the forest. Fanzell Kruger received training in swordsmanship and magic after wandering into her domain, the witch Dominant Code fled the forest because of its closed and controlling way of life, and Dorothy Unsworth, a mage who hails from the forest, eventually becomes her successor.
Although the Queen initially acts as an obstacle, her role in the story evolves considerably. During the final conflict known as Judgment Day, she fights alongside the Black Bulls and their allies. When many of the wounded are in danger of dying, she expends nearly all of her magical power and life force to heal them. Left weakened by this effort, she steps down as ruler and passes the title of Witch Queen to Dorothy Unsworth, ending her long reign not as a tyrant but as the guardian of the witches.
In combat, the Queen ranks among the most powerful mages in the story, with magical reserves compared to spirit magic and a strength that once made Yami retreat rather than face her directly. Her magic attribute is blood. She can generate and manipulate blood, shaping it into weapons such as enormous scythes, flooding a battlefield with a sea of blood, and pinning enemies to crosses of blood in an execution-style attack. Because she has given her blood to others, she can also control their bodies, a method she uses to puppet those she has transfused. In addition to her offensive capabilities, she commands advanced healing magic that can undo ancient curses, mend shattered bones, and reinforce limbs, as well as creation magic that allows her to shape objects out of blood. Her ability to see the future with high accuracy rounds out a diverse and formidable magical repertoire that makes her one of the most significant and powerful figures in the world she inhabits.
