Description
Patolli is a character from the anime Black Clover. He is an elf and the leader of the Eye of the Midnight Sun, an organization that operates in secret and holds deep hostility toward the Clover Kingdom. For much of the story he acts under the name and appearance of Licht, the former leader of the elf tribe, which causes others to mistake him for the legendary elf.
Patolli was born into the elf tribe centuries before the main events of the story. As a young child of about five years old, he witnessed Licht receiving a grimoire and asked his mother about the meaning of the four-leaf clover. He grew up close to Licht and a fellow elf named Rhya, and he heard rumors that humans might attack his people. Around five hundred years before the story begins, the elves were slaughtered by humans in an event that Patolli believed was carried out out of human hatred and fear. He did not know at the time that the devil Zagred was the true mastermind behind the massacre. When the devil revealed that he had manipulated the destruction of the elf tribe, Patolli fell into madness and despair, and the devil not only stole his grimoire but also transformed him into a dark elf.
Five centuries later, Patolli was reincarnated into the body of William Vangeance, a human magic knight captain from the Golden Dawn who happened to resemble Licht. Because he could not use William's grimoire, Patolli traveled to a grimoire tower and obtained his own four-leaf clover grimoire. He then founded the Eye of the Midnight Sun with the goal of exacting revenge on the humans of the Clover Kingdom, whom he blamed for the extinction of his people. His motivation throughout the first major arc of the series is driven by grief and a desire for vengeance, and he believes that wiping out humanity is the only way to honor the elves who died. In reality, his rage was cultivated and exploited by Zagred, who used him as a tool to further his own schemes.
In terms of personality, Patolli is intelligent, composed, and fiercely devoted to his fallen people. His grief has hardened him, and he views humans as irredeemable because of the massacre he witnessed. Beneath his cold exterior, he still holds deep affection for his fellow elves and for Licht, whom he idolized and whose identity he adopted. His admiration for Licht shapes much of his behavior, as he believes he is carrying out the revenge that Licht would have wanted. After learning the truth about Zagred's manipulation, he experiences profound despair and madness, but he ultimately shows that his actions were rooted in love for his tribe rather than simple cruelty.
Patolli's role in the story is that of the primary antagonist in the first major saga. He leads the Eye of the Midnight Sun in attacks against the Clover Kingdom and orchestrates an elaborate plan to reincarnate the souls of the elves into the bodies of humans so that his people can have another chance at life. This plan brings him into direct conflict with Asta and the Magic Knights, particularly the members of the Black Bulls and the Golden Dawn. His connection to William Vangeance is central to his story, as the two share one body, and their clash with the protagonist forces Patolli to confront his own choices.
His key relationships shape his development throughout the series. His bond with William Vangeance is the most significant, as living inside William's body gives him a close connection to a human who genuinely cares for him. This relationship eventually leads to Patolli's change of heart. His friendship with Rhya, who remains loyal to him even after learning the truth, also demonstrates the importance of companionship to him. Licht is another defining relationship, since Patolli modeled his entire public identity on Licht and sought to fulfill what he believed was Licht's mission. His relationship with the devil Zagred is one of manipulation, as Zagred is the true enemy responsible for the elves' destruction and for corrupting Patolli's grief into hatred.
In terms of character development, Patolli undergoes a significant transformation. He begins as a vengeful antagonist who sees all humans as guilty, but as the truth about the massacre comes to light and as he experiences kindness from humans like William and Asta, his worldview begins to shift. He ultimately chooses to sacrifice himself to save the Clover Kingdom, undoing much of the destruction he caused. Afterward, he is resurrected in an artificial body created in Licht's image and is given the chance to live peacefully alongside the humans he once sought to destroy.
Patolli is a highly capable magic user. He wields a four-leaf clover grimoire and uses light magic, which later becomes demon light magic after his corruption. His power allows him to create and bend light, move at extremely fast speeds, blind opponents with intense flashes, and heal wounds using a ray of healing light. He can also manifest weapons made of light, such as swords, arrows, whips, and orbs. His magical reserves are immense, and it is said that he possesses enough accumulated power to wipe out all humans in the kingdom if not for a seal placed on him. In his dark elf form, his magic becomes even more destructive, making him one of the most powerful threats the Clover Kingdom faces during his arc.
