Description
The character known as Jack l'Esbudellador in some sources is more widely recognized as Jack the Ripper, the captain of the Green Mantis squad of the Magic Knights in the Clover Kingdom. This tall and lean man, standing at 197 centimeters, has a pale complexion with gold eyes and loose, medium-length black hair. A distinctive thin, red scar or birthmark runs vertically down the left side of his face, from his forehead to his chin, passing over his left eye and the left side of his mouth, contributing to his perpetually menacing and wild appearance.
Born a commoner to a family of hunters in the mountains, Jack spent his early childhood learning to hunt from his father, who taught him to never challenge prey stronger than himself. This lesson held until the age of thirteen, when his father was killed by a powerful bear-like monster known as the Mountain Lord. Jack, for the first time, broke his father's rule and sought out the beast, successfully killing it. In that moment, he experienced an overwhelming sensation of pleasure and exhilaration from defeating something stronger than himself, which directly inspired him to pursue a life as a Magic Knight so he could continue experiencing that thrill.
This defining moment shapes the core of Jack the Ripper's personality. He is an aggressive and unapologetic battle maniac who derives immense joy from fighting and cutting things apart. He is often seen with a wide, sadistic grin and has a habit of running his tongue along his magic blades. His speech is characteristically loud, crude, and aggressive, showing little deference to anyone, including his fellow captains. Jack lives by a personal code that he would rather fight an opponent at their absolute best because it would be no fun to rip them to pieces otherwise. While his aggressive and unpredictable nature makes him feared and respected, he possesses a deep sense of duty as a protector of the Clover Kingdom and loyally stands on the front lines against its most dangerous threats.
As the captain of the Green Mantis, Jack holds the rank of Grand Magic Knight. His role in the story is consistently that of a powerful frontline combatant who is deployed against the most formidable enemies. He participated in the Royal Capital's defense during the Elf Reincarnation Arc, where he fought against the possessed Langris Vaude and the elf Fana. During the Spade Kingdom Raid Arc, Jack was selected as part of the elite team to invade the enemy kingdom, where he confronted Dante Zogratis of the Dark Triad. His most significant relationships are with fellow captains. He shares a fierce rivalry with Yami Sukehiro of the Black Bulls, the two frequently arguing and insulting each other, with Yami nicknaming him the vertical weirdo or long man. Despite their constant bickering, they share a mutual respect and have been known to fight together effectively; upon hearing of Yami's capture, Jack intended to rescue him alone. Jack also had a past connection to Nacht Faust's brother, Morgen, whose magic he remembers. This past encounter becomes tragically relevant when Morgen is resurrected as a Paladin.
Throughout the series, Jack demonstrates a particular form of growth regarding his view of people. As a commoner himself, he is open-minded and actively recruits commoners into his squad, the Green Mantis. However, he was initially skeptical of Yami's policy of accepting the lowest members of society, including peasants, into the Black Bulls. He changed his mind after witnessing the lower-class members Magna Swing and Zora Ideale achieve incredible victories through their own effort, leading him to genuinely acknowledge their strength.
Jack the Ripper's notable abilities center on his unique Slash Magic, also referred to as Severing Magic. This magic allows him to create large, scythe-like blades of mana on his arms and other parts of his body, which he uses to slash his targets. The true power of his magic, however, lies in its incredible adaptability. The more Jack uses his slashing attacks against an opponent, the more the properties of his blades change to match and overcome the nature of the enemy's magic. This ability allows him to cut through virtually anything, including spatial magic, the near-invincible beast Vetto, and even Dante's powerful gravity magic. His signature spell is Death Scythe, the basic form of his mana blades, which he can unleash in a relentless flurry of slashes known as Death Scythe: Wild Bloom. The more he cuts, the faster and sharper his blades become, making him a progressively more dangerous opponent as a battle continues.
