Description
Augustus Kira Clover XIII is the reigning monarch of the Clover Kingdom. He is a man of 35 years with a distinctive appearance, characterized by his short, golden-brown hair, a curled handlebar mustache, and a small, pointed goatee. His royal attire typically consists of a purple and white striped doublet, a green fur-lined mantle, and a yellow cravat, reflecting his high status.

His personality is defined by profound laziness and an immense, fragile ego. Augustus is deeply self-centered and believes unquestioningly in his own superiority and his right to constant praise and admiration. This desire for adoration makes him incredibly envious, particularly of the Magic Emperor, Julius Novachrono, whose popularity with the common people he resents. Augustus holds the common folk in contempt, adhering to the belief that royal blood is the sole determinant of a person's worth. Despite his arrogance, his will is weak, and he is incapable of handling even minor insults. This conceit extends to the Magic Knights, whom he views as tools for his own glorification, often attempting to take credit for their accomplishments while simultaneously looking down on them. His ignorance is a notable trait; he is often unable to follow complex magical or strategic discussions and has little understanding of the dangers the kingdom faces, expecting his title alone to command respect and halt conflict.

Augustus's primary motivation is the preservation of his own image and comfort. He craves recognition but is unwilling to engage with his subjects or perform the duties of a leader to earn it. His jealousy of Julius is a driving force, leading him to undermine the Magic Emperor's authority when possible, such as when he announced the formation of the Royal Knights to take credit for a plan he had little part in devising. His role in the story is largely that of an antagonistic figurehead. He represents the corrupt and stagnant nobility that the series' protagonists, particularly Asta, challenge. He is not a direct combatant in major battles but instead serves as an obstacle through his decrees, such as when he attempted to have Asta and Yuno executed for a perceived lack of respect. During the Elf Reincarnation arc, his vulnerability is exposed when an elf-possessed Langris Vaude invades the castle. In a panic, Augustus attempts to use his magic to intimidate the intruder, but his spell is easily shattered, leaving him cowering and nearly killed.

His most notable relationships are defined by his pettiness. He is openly antagonistic towards Julius Novachrono, viewing him as a rival for the people's affection. He has a transactional relationship with the Magic Knights, whom he sees as servants. He briefly and mistakenly praises the Bronze Knight Sekke Bronzazza for saving him, believing Sekke to be responsible for his rescue during the elf attack. His relationship with his own relative, Damnatio Kira, the chairman of the Magic Parliament, highlights his incompetence; while Augustus panics and issues foolish decrees, Damnatio acts with cold, strategic pragmatism to maintain order.

Augustus shows very little character development throughout the series. He remains a consistently vain, cowardly, and ineffectual ruler whose narrow worldview is repeatedly shown to be a liability for the kingdom. His few moments of action only serve to underscore his powerlessness and lack of true authority, especially when contrasted with the capable Magic Emperor.

Despite his incompetence, Augustus possesses a significant amount of magical power, a trait common among royals. He wields Light Magic, a rare and powerful attribute. However, he lacks the tactical skill and resolve to use it effectively. His most notable spell, which he grandly named the "Absolute Monarch of Divine Brilliance," creates a massive, glowing construct of himself. This technique is largely for show, intended to awe his enemies rather than function as a practical combat spell. It was easily destroyed by an elf's spatial magic, demonstrating that his immense mana reserves do not compensate for his lack of fighting spirit or intelligence.
