Description
Rades, whose full name is Rades Spirito, is a rogue mage from the Clover Kingdom in the anime Black Clover. He comes from a commoner background and once entered the Magic Knights, earning a place in the Purple Orca squad. During that time, the other knights came to distrust his unusual magic, and he was eventually expelled from the kingdom. That experience left him bitter toward the Clover Kingdom and its magical hierarchy, and it shaped much of his later behavior.

In appearance, Rades is a man of average height with long, messy, light purple hair and a blue eye. A dark bandage-like covering hides his left eye and part of his forehead, fitted with a small light green eye ornament, which gives him a striking and somewhat unkempt look. His personality matches his appearance: he is cruel, arrogant, and intensely proud of his abilities. He openly argues that people with high magical power are entitled to oppress those weaker than themselves, a belief rooted in his resentment of how he was treated. He also tends to overestimate his own strength, and he is fond of taunting opponents, boasting that he can win while simply watching his creations fight for him.

After his exile, Rades joined the Eye of the Midnight Sun, an organization of rogue mages dedicated to destroying the Clover Kingdom. Under its leader, Licht, he became one of the group's more fearsome combatants, taking part in attacks against the kingdom and clashing with the Magic Knights on multiple occasions. His role in the story is that of a recurring antagonist within that organization, a figure who threatens the heroes with his unnatural magic before later events change his alignment.

Rades's notable ability is Soul Corpse Magic, which lets him animate dead bodies by channeling his mana through them. The corpses he raises retain the magical abilities they possessed in life, and because Rades has an enormous mana reserve, comparable in scale to that of royalty, he can command several hundred of them at once. He prefers to remain at a distance and direct his undead army rather than engage in direct combat, a style that suits both his powers and his arrogance.

The most significant development in his story involves his relationship with the Eye of the Midnight Sun and the elves. Rades served the organization faithfully, but during the elf reincarnation plan carried out by its true leader, Patry, he was used as a sacrifice for the reincarnation magic. Feeling betrayed and enraged at being treated as a disposable tool, he turned against the elves and joined the ensuing conflict, fighting on the side of the kingdom's forces against those who had wronged him. That event marks a clear shift from enemy to reluctant participant in the larger struggle: his new alignment is driven less by loyalty to the Magic Knights than by anger at being used as a pawn. Following these events, Rades is counted among the elite mages selected to oppose the Spade Kingdom, meaning he eventually fights alongside the people he once opposed, even though his harsh and self-serving nature remains largely unchanged.
