Description
Jack the Ripper is the captain of the Green Praying Mantis squad of the Magic Knights. He was born a commoner on June 1st and is 28 years old, standing at 197 centimeters tall. His past as a commoner shapes his perspective; he grew up in a family of hunters in the mountains. When he was 13 years old, his father was killed by a great bear, a powerful beast his father had always warned him not to challenge. Jack disobeyed that warning, hunted down the bear, and killed it. This moment gave him an intense thrill and set him on the path of seeking out ever-stronger opponents to cut down, ultimately leading him to join the Magic Knights.
In personality, Jack is defined by an aggressive and almost manic love for battle. He is a self-proclaimed lover of destruction and is always seen with a wide, unsettling grin, often licking his blades in excitement. His primary joy in life is the act of tearing things apart, from physical objects to powerful magical defenses. He has a competitive and arrogant streak, frequently clashing with other captains, but beneath his savage exterior lies a genuine sense of duty as a protector of the Clover Kingdom. Despite his bloodthirsty nature, he is loyal to his allies and values strength and merit over social status. Because of his own commoner origins, he actively recruits commoners into his squad, believing in giving capable individuals a chance regardless of their birth.
Jack's core motivation is simple: to fight strong enemies and cut everything apart. He is driven by the thrill of the hunt and the challenge of facing an opponent whose defenses he cannot immediately breach. This desire fuels his unique combat ability, as he is not satisfied until he has sliced through whatever stands before him. Later in the story, his duty to the kingdom and his respect for fellow powerful mages also drive him to fight on behalf of Clover, even against overwhelming threats like the devils of the Spade Kingdom.
His role in the story is primarily that of a powerful ally and a frontline combatant. As a squad captain, he is one of the Clover Kingdom's greatest military assets. He plays a significant part in major conflicts, including the battle against the reincarnated elves, where he fought alongside Yami Sukehiro. He later becomes a key member of the elite force sent to invade the Spade Kingdom to confront the Dark Triad. In this conflict, he is instrumental in battling one of its most powerful members, Dante Zogratis.
Jack's key relationships are defined by rivalry and respect. His most notable dynamic is with Yami Sukehiro, the captain of the Black Bulls. The two share a fierce rivalry, constantly bickering and competing over trivial matters, and have even been known to level a mountain during one of their lighthearted fights. Yami gives him nicknames like "Vertical Weirdo" due to his tall, lanky frame. Despite their constant squabbling, they have a deep mutual respect and function as effective allies in battle. When Yami was captured, Jack, despite his harsh words, immediately set out to rescue him alone. He also has a history with Nacht Faust, the vice-captain of the Black Bulls. Jack remembers Nacht's brother, Morgen, and senses something different about the magic Nacht uses.
Throughout the series, Jack's character develops primarily in his combat philosophy. He begins as a simple battle-maniac but learns to refine his abilities to an extraordinary degree. His relationship with his own squad also develops subtly, as he learns to acknowledge the strength of his subordinates, particularly commoners like Magna Swing and Zora Ideale, whose impressive victories change his initial skepticism about recruiting from the lowest classes. His final act is one of ultimate sacrifice, as he is eventually killed in battle against a resurrected Morgen on Judgment Day.
Jack's notable abilities center on his unique Severing Magic, also known as Slash Magic. This magic allows him to create massive, scythe-like blades from his mana, usually extending from his forearms. The primary and most dangerous characteristic of his magic is its ability to adapt. The more his blades clash with an opponent's magic, the more they sharpen and adjust their properties to cut through it. This allows him to eventually sever almost any target, regardless of its nature. He has proven capable of adapting to and cutting through spatial magic, the regeneration granted by otherworldly magic, and even Dante's gravitational magic after sufficient exposure. His signature techniques include Death Scythe, a powerful slash, and Death Scythe Wild Bloom, a chaotic flurry of flying slashes. He also employs Reinforcement Magic to boost his physical speed and durability, making him a formidable close-combat specialist.
