Description
Lashinu, known in Japanese as Racine, is a supporting character in the anime film Maquia - When the Promised Flower Blooms. She is an elder of the Iorph, a long-lived race whose members stop physically aging in their mid-teens and can live for hundreds of years. Lashinu serves as the chief of the Iorph clan, guiding the community from within their secluded village. She is depicted with long silver hair and a calm, composed demeanor, dressed in traditional Iorph attire.
Lashinu possesses a reserved and restrained personality. She prioritizes the stability and continuity of the Iorph community over individual desires, adhering firmly to the traditions and norms that have been cultivated over many generations. Her decision-making is rooted in caution and a deep respect for the slow, deliberate pace of a long-lived existence. She is wary of the outside world and discourages emotional attachments to humans, viewing such connections as a source of inevitable pain and loneliness for her people.
Her primary motivation is the preservation and protection of the Iorph way of life. She believes that maintaining distance from the human realm is the surest way to avoid suffering and disruption. This protective stance, while born from wisdom and experience, also reflects a fear of change and a reluctance to engage with the transient world beyond their borders.
Lashinu's role in the story is confined to the beginning of the film. She acts as a figure of authority and a symbol of the old, insular Iorph ways. She is the one who warns the orphaned Maquia about the dangers of forming bonds with outsiders, telling her that doing so will lead to true loneliness. This warning frames the central conflict of the film, as Maquia's journey directly contradicts Lashinu's teachings. Lashinu's character represents the stagnant and isolated existence that the Iorph have chosen, and her warnings serve as the philosophical counterpoint to the love and connection Maquia later experiences.
Her key relationship is with Maquia, to whom she is a mentor and caretaker within the village. She also has a protective relationship with Leilia, another young Iorph woman. With the broader Iorph community, Lashinu functions as a matriarchal leader, making decisions for the group's welfare. Her interactions with Maquia highlight the generational and ideological divide between the cautious elder and the curious, lonely youth.
Lashinu does not undergo significant personal development within the film's narrative, as she appears only in the opening scenes before the Iorph village is attacked and she is presumably killed or lost in the invasion. Her function is largely static: she embodies the principles of isolation and restraint that the protagonist must ultimately transcend.
Her notable abilities are those common to all Iorph: extremely long lifespans and a youthful appearance that persists for centuries. As an elder and chief, she also possesses the knowledge and authority to lead her people, and she is skilled in the craft of weaving Hibiol, the special cloth the Iorph use to chronicle their history and daily lives.
