Description
Barou, also known as Barrow, is a supporting character in the film Maquia - When the Promised Flower Blooms. He is a merchant of mixed heritage, being half-Iorph, which distinguishes him from the full-blooded Iorph people like the film's protagonist, Maquia. Due to this mixed lineage, Barou ages slowly, but at a faster rate than a pure Iorph, giving him a more mature and weathered appearance than others of a similar age.
Barou first encounters Maquia in the aftermath of a tragic event. He comes across a traveling caravan that has been raided by bandits and briefly meets Maquia there after her escape from the attack on her home. He then sees her off as she leaves with an orphaned human baby she names Ariel. Throughout the story, Barou serves as a recurring and helpful presence for Maquia. He later saves her from being captured by guards in the city of Mezarte, and at the film's conclusion, he is seen waiting for her with a cart after her final, poignant visit with an elderly Ariel, ready to continue her journey.
In terms of appearance, Barou shares the blonde hair and red eyes common to the Iorph, but he typically keeps his hair hidden under a black and white bandana. He sports a goatee and wears a practical traveler's outfit consisting of a long yellow coat over light brown pants, complemented by dark brown thigh-high boots and gloves. An array of colorful belts and pouches adorn his coat, and he keeps a knife sheathed on his hip for protection.
Barou's personality is a blend of world-weariness and dry humor. He typically speaks with a witty and sarcastic tone and seems to have an affinity for alcohol, as he is often seen drinking. He comes across as a carefree individual who appears disinterested in the lives and wellbeing of others, yet this exterior masks a genuine, if understated, concern for Maquia. He demonstrates this by risking his own safety to rescue her from soldiers and by showing an interest in how her adopted son, Ariel, is faring. His relationship with Maquia's past is hinted at through his apparent closeness with the Elder Racine, the matriarch of the Iorph who raised Maquia. In a memorable moment late in the film, Barou laughs upon seeing Maquia's reddened eyes after Ariel's death, commenting that the Elder would have also been amused at her face. Despite his sardonic nature, he always remains good-natured toward Maquia in their interactions, acting as a grounded and reliable, if unconventional, companion.
