Description
Jacko, almost universally known by his name Jango, is a character who appears in the recap film One Piece Episode of East Blue: Luffy and His Four Friends' Great Adventure. He is originally a pirate from the East Blue, serving as the former first mate and later captain of the Black Cat Pirates before undergoing a significant career change to become a commissioned officer in the Marines. Standing an imposing 207 centimeters tall, his most distinctive physical features are his heart-shaped sunglasses and the peculiar heart-shaped pupils revealed when he removes them, a design that gives him a unique and somewhat eccentric appearance. Prior to his life of crime, Jango was a wandering dancer, a background that heavily influences his flamboyant and rhythmic mannerisms. His abilities as a dancer are highly developed, rivaling his skills as a hypnotist, and he incorporates dance-like movements into his fighting style. His iconic dance moves are a well-known aspect of his character, drawing a clear stylistic inspiration that makes him stand out among the more brutish pirates of the East Blue. His personality is a complex mix of professional loyalty and theatrical showmanship. He is unfailingly devoted to his chosen leaders, first serving Captain Kuro of the Black Cat Pirates with absolute obedience and later transferring that same dedication to the Marines. Despite his villainous role as an antagonist, he is not inherently cruel or malicious; rather, he is portrayed as someone who earnestly follows the orders of those he respects, carrying out his duties with a sense of flair. He has a dramatic and somewhat vain side, enjoying the spotlight and the performance aspect of his hypnotism. However, his abilities come with a significant and often-played-for-laughs drawback: to perform his hypnotism, he must swing his ring-shaped blade pendulum and chant his mantra. If he fails to lower his hat or close his eyes at the final moment, he will hypnotize himself, typically falling into a deep, comical sleep on the spot. This self-induced vulnerability injects a note of unpredictability and humor into his confrontations. His motivations are surprisingly straightforward for a character who begins as a pirate. Initially, his primary drive is loyalty to Captain Kuro, following a three-year plan to help his former captain fake his death and steal a wealthy young woman's inheritance. His role in the story of the East Blue is that of a secondary antagonist, tasked with hypnotizing the heiress Kaya into signing a will that would leave her fortune to Kuro. He confronts the Straw Hat crew on the斜坡 leading to Kaya's mansion, where he is ultimately defeated by the sniper Usopp. Unlike many defeated villains who simply disappear, his journey does not end there, as he later finds himself on the run from the Marines. His key relationships are central to his character development. His bond with his former captain, Kuro, is one of intense and misguided loyalty, as he willingly helps orchestrate a complex theft. The most pivotal relationship in his life, however, forms after his defeat, with Marine officer Fullbody. The two begin as enemies, but due to their shared passion for dance, they develop an unlikely friendship. This friendship is so profound that Fullbody helps Jango secure a pardon from the Marines. Along with another Marine officer, Hina, the three form a close-knit unit. Jango's development is one of the most notable in the series for a minor antagonist, as he transitions from a wanted pirate captain to a respected member of the World Government's forces, eventually becoming a Marine lieutenant commander or major. He is seen participating in the summit war at Marineford as a Marine soldier, demonstrating his complete integration into the organization. Regarding his abilities, Jango is a master hypnotist, a power he gained accidentally after eating a strange mushroom that grew on his chin while he slept. His primary tool is a large, bladed ring attached to a string, which he swings rhythmically in front of his target while saying, One, Two, Jango. This hypnosis can be used to put individuals to sleep, implant simple commands, or even alter the perception of events. In combat, he can also throw his ring like a razor-sharp boomerang, making it a versatile weapon. His most notable ability remains his dancing, which is not just for show but an integral part of his fighting and performance style, showcasing the character's unique blend of criminal intent and entertainer's heart.
