Description
Okiku, whose name literally means "chrysanthemum," is a recurring character in the anime and manga of Konohana Kitan. She is not one of the fox attendants who staff the inn Konohanatei; instead, she is a living traditional Japanese doll who comes to live at the inn and eventually serves there as a maid.

Okiku was originally a finely crafted doll made by a famous artisan. Her original owner came to find her creepy, feared her, and rejected her, and it was this rejection that led to her being regarded as a cursed doll. Despite that label, she is genuinely alive in her own way: she can speak, move on her own, and even grow her hair, abilities that made her seem unsettling to those around her. A Buddhist priest was asked to perform a memorial service for her, but instead of laying her to rest, he brought her to the inn Konohanatei. There she received a makeover and adopted the role of a maid, settling in as part of the inn's household.

In the story, Okiku first appears in the second volume of the manga as a minor character and becomes a recurring presence afterward. Her debut chapter and episode center on her transformation and her new life at the inn, where she is accepted rather than feared. The contrast between her past and her present defines her character: once seen as something frightening to be discarded, she finds at the inn a place where she is given a role, a home, and an ordinary daily purpose as one of its workers.

Her key relationships reflect that journey. Her original owner represents fear and abandonment, while the Buddhist priest is the figure who shows her compassion by bringing her somewhere safe. At Konohanatei she joins the inn's community and works alongside its staff, becoming one of the familiar faces of the household rather than an outsider.

In terms of notable abilities, Okiku's defining trait is her existence as an animate object. As a living doll, she can talk and move freely, and her hair can grow of its own accord. These supernatural qualities, which once marked her as cursed, become an accepted part of who she is in her new home. Through her time at the inn, she develops from a rejected and feared object into a settled member of the community, fulfilling the modest role of a maid in a place that has come to belong to her.
