Description
Julia Jinyu is a central figure in FLCL Progressive, introduced as a mysterious and capable woman who immediately makes a dramatic impact on the life of the protagonist, Hidomi Hibajiri. She is an extraterrestrial being who shares a unique and fundamental connection with the series' recurring anti-heroine, Haruko Haruhara, as she is revealed to be Haruko's other half. This split occurred when Haruko attempted to absorb the immense power of the cosmic being known as Atomsk, causing a fragment of her to separate and take on its own form as Jinyu.
In terms of personality, Jinyu serves as a stark contrast to the chaotic and impulsive Haruko. Where Haruko is reckless and driven by selfish desire, Jinyu is mature, calm, and genuinely kind. She carries a sense of responsibility and a desire to do what is right, exemplified by her protective behavior towards the residents of Mabase, particularly Hidomi. Her composed demeanor and serious nature suggest that she embodies the more rational and suppressed emotions of her original self, including a deep, caring love for Atomsk, in contrast to Haruko's obsession with merely possessing his strength. Her appearance reflects this serious edge; she has long, spiky white hair tied in a ponytail, red eyes with vertical red stripes beneath them, and a darker skin complexion than Haruko. Her typical outfit consists of a green tube top under a short lavender jacket, black leggings, and distinctive white boots with purple stripes.
Jinyu's primary motivation is to protect Atomsk from being captured and exploited, which puts her in direct opposition to Haruko. She also seeks to shield the people of Earth from the dangerous fallout of Haruko and the intergalactic forces of Medical Mechanica. Her role in the story is established early when she tests Hidomi's latent N.O. abilities by running her over with her car. After confirming Hidomi's potential as a powerful N.O. channel, Jinyu takes on the guise of a maid for Hidomi's family, working at their café to stay close and act as her protector. Throughout the series, she acts as a guardian, a voice of reason, and a direct physical rival to Haruko, frequently engaging in battles with her to prevent her schemes.
Her key relationships define her actions throughout the narrative. Her relationship with Haruko is the most complex; they are two halves of a single being, yet they are irreconcilably conflicted. Jinyu often addresses her counterpart as Raharu and appeals to her to abandon her selfish pursuit, but this only deepens Haruko's resolve to eliminate her. Regarding Hidomi, Jinyu is fiercely protective, serving as a mentor and guardian who offers advice and intervenes to save her from extraterrestrial dangers. Her feelings towards Atomsk are one of admiration and a desire for his freedom, which is the core philosophical difference between her and Haruko.
Throughout the series, Jinyu undergoes a significant but cyclical development. After a final confrontation where she pleads with Haruko to change her ways, Haruko attacks and absorbs her back into her body. However, Jinyu is later set free when Haruko's attempt to absorb Atomsk's power fails, causing them to split once more. In a twist, Atomsk briefly bonds with Jinyu before finally departing. She is last seen comforting a frustrated Haruko, showing a moment of reconciliation between the two halves.
In terms of abilities, Jinyu possesses powers nearly equal to Haruko's, only being defeated when she lets her guard down. She can generate a mysterious, glowing blue aura similar to the red aura associated with Atomsk's power. She pilots a powerful Chevrolet Bel Air Convertible that can transform, fly, and even function as a medical station. Her primary weapon is a white guitar that resembles a Fender Jazzmaster, which she uses for flight and combat, similar to Haruko's bass guitar. Her capabilities make her a formidable force, often seen lifting her car with ease and engaging in high-speed aerial battles, all in her mission to protect the people of Mabase and preserve the freedom of the Pirate King, Atomsk.
