Description
Chikage Kazama stands as a pivotal figure throughout the Hakuōki franchise, originating in the visual novels and expanding into anime seasons, films, and spin-offs. As the head of the powerful western Kazama clan of pure-blooded demons (oni), his actions are deeply rooted in his heritage and responsibilities. Bound by an ancestral debt of honor to the Satsuma domain for protection received after the Battle of Sekigahara, he aids imperialist forces while openly expressing his disdain for humans.

Kazama possesses distinct honey-blond hair and red eyes, typically clad in traditional Japanese attire like a white kimono with dark accents and a haori. He occasionally adopts Western clothing, notably a purple outfit in later narratives. When revealing his true demon form, his hair shifts to silver, his eyes turn yellow, and four white horns manifest.

His personality is marked by arrogance, cynicism, and a firm belief in demonic superiority. He perceives humans as greedy and foolish, reserving particular contempt for the artificially transformed Rasetsu (Furies), whom he considers abominations. Valuing honesty, he rarely lies outright, though he may strategically omit truths. Despite a cold exterior, he exhibits fierce loyalty to his clan and an obsessive drive in pursuing his goals.

Kazama's role consistently centers on Chizuru Yukimura, the last known pure-blooded female demon. Initially, he seeks to forcibly marry her to produce powerful offspring and preserve the Yukimura bloodline, resulting in repeated attempts to abduct her from the Shinsengumi. These efforts lead to confrontations with key figures; during the Ikedaya incident, he inflicts severe internal injuries on Okita Souji, and later engages Hijikata Toshizo in multiple clashes. Their conflict escalates to a duel where Hijikata consumes the Water of Life to match Kazama's demonic strength, culminating in Kazama acknowledging Hijikata's resolve and bestowing upon him the title "Hakuōki" (Pale Sakura Demon) before seemingly falling in battle.

His relationship with Chizuru evolves depending on the narrative route. In most paths, he remains an antagonist, treating her as a prize. However, within his dedicated route (notably in "Hakuōki: Edo Blossoms"), he shifts toward protector and potential love interest. After rescuing her from an explosion, he accompanies her journey to reunite with the Shinsengumi, spending over a year searching for passage to Ezo to fulfill his vow to her. He also kills her father, Kodo Yukimura, upon discovering Kodo's corrupted intention to use Chizuru's blood for domination.

In the prequel "Hakuōki: Reimeiroku," he appears briefly to intervene in an attack on Kamo Serizawa, noting Serizawa's debilitating illness. Films and OVAs retain his core traits while adjusting focus; later arcs prioritize demonic pride over world domination, and the first film depicts more eccentric behavior. The high school spin-off "Hakuōki SSL" reimagines him as a university graduate who enrolls as a student and serves as student council president, maintaining his rivalry with Hijikata in a modern setting.

Across all media, his storylines explore themes of duty versus personal desire, the consequences of prejudice, and the conflict between tradition and change. His character development often hinges on an inability to reconcile ingrained beliefs with emerging attachments to humans or growing respect for adversaries like the Shinsengumi.
