Description
Tsukata Kanda is one of the main characters in FLCL Alternative. Before joining the Interstellar Immigration Bureau, he was a high school athlete on the school’s baseball team, though he never got to play or even serve as a benchwarmer when the team made it to the national championship tournament known as Koshien. After his last summer on the team, he took up smoking cigarettes at the age of seventeen. At some point, he became an operative for the Bureau, where he is shown to be the only person working, constantly having to deal with both Prime Minister Kitaki as well as Haruko.
He has black hair and stubble around his face, wears semi-rimless eyeglasses, and is typically dressed in a grey business suit with a white dress shirt and a sloppily tied blue necktie. He often eats at the noodle shop operated by Dennis Yoga, where Kana Koumoto works as a server, and usually orders tsukumi-soba, a hot buckwheat noodle dish topped with a raw egg. He is shown to still be a big fan of baseball, as he texted Masaki Aofuji pictures of himself with his catcher’s mitt and demonstrated his pitching skills to Kana during a break from experiments. He appears to be somewhat bitter and worn out, a demeanor likely shaped by his unfulfilling baseball past and the frustrating nature of his current responsibilities.
In the story, Kanda operates from his base, monitoring the activities of Medical Mechanica and the giant irons that threaten to flatten the Earth. He is one of the few adults aware of the cosmic-scale conflict and attempts to manage the fallout, often with little success or cooperation from his superiors. He has a key relationship with the protagonist, Kana, whom he observes and whose latent N.O. powers are crucial to the unfolding events. He also shares a past with Haruko, with rumors of a previous fling between them, though he does not seem as frustrated or personally driven by her as other characters have been in the past. His interactions with Prime Minister Kitaki are portrayed as a source of constant exasperation, as she remains largely indifferent to the impending global catastrophe.
Throughout FLCL Alternative, Kanda’s development is tied to his resignation and eventual acceptance of change. Initially, he appears burdened by his duties and stuck in a cynical routine. However, by the finale, he works alongside Haruko on a plan to use Kana’s N.O. powers to save humanity. In this process, he learns a lesson about not staying in the past and looking toward the future, representing a more positive outcome for an adult figure in the FLCL universe. He does not possess supernatural abilities like N.O. channeling but is notable for his practical skills, including his pitching arm, and his competence in managing the Bureau’s technology and experiments. His function in the narrative is to serve as a grounded, world-weary adult counterpart to the teenage protagonists, highlighting the anxieties of growing up and the burden of adult responsibility.
