Description
Papa is the title given to the supreme leader of the APE council, the governing authority that controls the plantations where humanity lives within the world of DARLING in the FRANXX. As chairman of the council, Papa holds authority over all of known human society. He appears as a masked figure dressed in white formal attire, and his face is never shown. He typically communicates with the child pilots, known as parasites, through screens, broadcasts, and announcements, and his voice is noted to vary in age and gender across different appearances, which is one of the early hints that his persona is not what it seems.
In personality, Papa presents himself as a calm and paternal authority. The parasites are raised from early childhood to call him Papa and to revere him in a near-religious manner, and most of them genuinely believe he is a benevolent guardian who protects humanity. Beneath this composed exterior, however, he is cold, detached, and calculating. He treats the child pilots as expendable instruments of the system and issues orders without hesitation, including commands for them to undertake suicide missions or to be disposed of when they are no longer useful. He shows no personal attachment to the individuals under his care, and his behavior reflects a firm belief in his own superiority and in the rightness of his control over human life.
