Description
Enji Koma is a ghoul who works as a waiter at the Anteiku coffee shop. He is known for his distinctive pompadour hairstyle and his bulbous nose, and he typically wears a uniform that includes a bow tie, setting him apart from other staff members. His outward appearance as a cheerful and polite employee contrasts significantly with his violent history. In his youth, he was a notorious figure known as the Devil Ape, the leader of a powerful and brutal ghoul gang called the Apes that once controlled much of the 20th ward and was infamous for hunting and killing CCG investigators.
Koma's personality is defined by a dual nature. In his daily life at Anteiku, he is playful, talkative, and proud of his work, often acting as a mentor and supervisor to younger employees like Ken Kaneki when the manager, Yoshimura, is absent. He takes genuine pride in his coffee brewing skills and enjoys joking about his past as the Demon Ape, a reputation that most of his coworkers do not take seriously until it is proven true. Despite this lighthearted exterior, he possesses a deeper, more thoughtful side, as seen in his reflections on the responsibilities of leaders and subordinates. His easygoing demeanor is a deliberate choice, masking a former self that was far more violent and brutal.
Koma's central motivation is a desire for redemption and a peaceful existence. He abandoned his life as a gang leader after being approached by Kuzen Yoshimura, the manager of Anteiku, who offered him a vision of living in human society without unnecessary violence. This relationship with Yoshimura is the cornerstone of his character; he holds deep loyalty to the man who gave him a chance to change his life, trading his reputation as a feared ghoul for the humble role of a cleaner and later a waiter. He accepted menial tasks like cleaning without complaint, understanding that Yoshimura assigned him these duties to teach him patience and humility. This transformation from a feared outlaw to a dedicated employee shapes his entire role in the story as a protector of the peaceful haven that Anteiku represents.
In the story, Koma serves as a bridge between the ghouls' violent underworld and the fragile peace of Anteiku. During the Owl Suppression Operation, the CCG's raid on the café, he fully embraces his past identity once more. Donning his white coat and monkey mask, he emerges as the Devil Ape to defend Anteiku, leading his old gang against the investigators. In this battle, he demonstrates his formidable power, fighting on par with a Special Class Investigator for an extended time. His bikaku kagune, which manifests as a prehensile monkey-like tail, is used primarily for agile movement and evasion rather than as a direct weapon, allowing him to navigate combat with great skill.
Koma's personal relationships are significant to his development. He shares a long and complicated history with his coworker Kaya Irimi, having been rivals with her when she led the rival Black Dobers gang. At Anteiku, this rivalry transforms into a bond of mutual respect and camaraderie; they are often seen together and worry for each other's safety in battle. With Ken Kaneki, Koma acts as an occasional mentor, offering advice on both coffee brewing and life, and he later willingly accepts Kaneki's leadership when the organization Goat is founded, showing his ability to adapt his loyalty. He also serves as a mediator among the often-temperamental Anteiku staff, using his calm demeanor to defuse arguments, such as those involving Touka Kirishima, often by simply brewing them coffee.
Enji Koma's development throughout the series sees him complete an arc from a violent gang leader to a loyal protector and finally to a figure of tragic sacrifice. He survives the Anteiku raid and later returns in Tokyo Ghoul: re, alive and well, to support the new café and assist Kaneki's operations. In the final stages of the story, he is confronted and killed by the mysterious V organization, and his body is seized to be repurposed as a quinque, a weapon for ghoul investigators. His remains meet their end at the hands of his own allies, bringing a somber conclusion to his journey of redemption.
