Description
Tōya Ebata is a powerhouse cardfighter renowned for exceptional records in unofficial matches. He sports blonde hair typically swept into a ponytail and dresses in a white t-shirt beneath a red coat, accessorized with a red and silver ring on his left hand and a pendant around his neck. Academically gifted from a young age, he consistently achieved top grades, leading his parents to prioritize his studies over other pursuits. His grandmother gifted him a Vanguard deck on his birthday, encouraging him to balance work with enjoyment. Following her severe illness and passing, he vowed to become a doctor while resolving to defeat Danji Momoyama as a final goal before quitting Vanguard entirely.
Initially perceived as mature and responsible, he demonstrates a strong work ethic in his medical studies and various part-time jobs. A more innocent, childlike side emerges through shared preferences in food and deckbuilding strategies with Yu-yu Kondo. However, consecutive losses to Danji and later Yu-yu trigger a significant psychological shift, fueling resentment and destructive behavior. Manipulated by Masanori Iseki, he aggressively targets Team Blackout, defeating Megumi Okura and Yu-yu before burning the team's banner. This act culminates in a cardfight challenge from Danji, which Tōya initially loses. Through repeated matches, he eventually achieves victory, with Danji noting his increased stability. As atonement for his actions, Danji appoints him the new leader of Team Blackout, shocking the team members.
As leader, he attempts to single-handedly assume Danji's former responsibilities while repairing the emotional and physical damage he inflicted on the team. He gradually accepts support from teammates, though retains financially irresponsible habits, frequently purchasing entire cartons of card booster boxes and neglecting broader budgetary needs, prompting repeated admonishments from others. This spending pattern persists even after leaving the team.
In competitive events, he participates in the Deluxe tournaments organized by Jinki Mukae. During the first tournament, he secures first place in his group. In the subsequent D2 tournament, he places second in Group C after losing to Megumi Okura but defeating other preliminary fighters. Advancing to the quarterfinals, he is eliminated by Gui.
His departure from Team Blackout occurs between seasons, transferring leadership to Yu-yu Kondo to pursue personal goals. He maintains a complex relationship with the team; while Megumi acknowledges lingering resentment over the destruction of the Merry-Go-Round, she and others eventually accept him as a friend and former leader.
