Description
Ebifurya is an alien being from the anime Urahara, originating from a planet entirely devoid of creativity. As a member of a species known as the Scoopers, his primary mission involves traveling across the galaxy to steal the cultural and creative expressions of other worlds. He serves as the loyal attendant to Misa, the princess of the Scoopers, and is deeply committed to fulfilling their shared objective of acquiring creativity for their barren home planet.
Upon arriving on Earth in the Harajuku district of Tokyo, Ebifurya adopts a disguise based on a traditional Japanese dish, taking the form of a large, talking fried shrimp. His assumed name is a direct play on the Japanese word for this food, ebi furai. In this guise, he presents himself as an ally to the three human protagonists, Rito, Kotoko, and Mari. He provides them with devices called amatsumaras, which grant them the ability to fight against other Scooper invaders who are stealing the city's culture. His apparent goal is to help the girls protect their beloved town, a role that makes him seem like a supporting mentor figure.
However, Ebifurya's true motivations are more complex and self-serving. He is not simply a helper but is in fact the secondary antagonist, orchestrating a scheme to harvest the girls' powerful creativity. His plan is to have the girls defeat and consume other Scoopers, which is part of a deceptive process intended to gradually transform them into Scoopers themselves. Once they fully convert, their creative energies would belong to his people. This calculated manipulation reveals a personality that is cunning and single-minded in its devotion to his mission. He is initially presented as calm and supportive, but when his plans are threatened, he displays a fierce and aggressive determination.
The key relationship in Ebifurya's story is with Princess Misa. He is utterly dedicated to serving her, treating her as the central figure of his existence. However, his loyalty is tested when Misa begins to experience and appreciate human creativity firsthand, learning to make things like bead bracelets and developing a genuine desire to be creative herself rather than merely stealing it. Ebifurya is unable to comprehend this change, viewing her newfound appreciation for human imagination as a betrayal. When Misa decides to abandon their original plan, Ebifurya turns against her in a fit of rage and confusion, refusing to accept that her perspective has evolved. This conflict leads to his role as a direct antagonist in the final narrative arc.
In terms of character development, Ebifurya remains largely static in his beliefs about creativity, representing the old, imperialistic way of the Scoopers. His arc concludes when he is defeated by Misa, who uses her own newly developed creativity to stop his rampage. Despite his antagonistic actions, Misa forgives him, and he ultimately returns with her to their home planet, where they intend to bring creativity in a peaceful manner. His defeat is not just a physical one but an ideological one, as Misa's approach proves more effective than his method of theft.
Ebifurya's notable abilities stem from his nature as a Scooper. He has access to advanced alien technology, most significantly the amatsumaras, which he can grant to humans to bestow temporary combat powers. He also possesses the ability to change his form, assuming his iconic fried shrimp disguise to blend into human society. When his scheme unravels, he demonstrates the power to grow to a gigantic size, becoming a formidable physical threat that chases the protagonists through the ruins of Harajuku. This transformation represents his final, desperate attempt to forcefully impose his will when his manipulation and deception have failed.
