Description
John and Shaun are a Shadow-Living Doll pair residing in the mansion. Shaun, originally named John in his human life, hailed from Mirrorside Village where he excelled as the top student and acted as the protective older brother to two siblings. He aided an orphaned circus performer in entering the Shadows House selection by bestowing the name "Kate" and styling her hair after his sister. Concealing his poor eyesight during the selection process, he internalized Patrick's emphasis on outer appearances.

Shaun possesses a quiet, observant, and intelligent personality, consistently prioritizing his master John's wellbeing. Despite his reserved nature, he demonstrates bluntness and protectiveness toward friends like Emilico and Rum. He forged a close bond with Emilico and Rum during their joint punishment investigating the Phantom Incident, where they discovered a broken door causing soot leaks. His relationship with Ricky involves frequent bickering underpinned by mutual care, evident when Shaun required an apology before assisting Ricky during the Debut. Following the Debut, Shaun grappled with identity-related doubts upon learning John formed independently rather than by mimicking him.

John presents as energetic, extroverted, and impulsive, contrasting Shaun's introspective demeanor. He treats Shaun with notable respect, offering to wear glasses to enable Shaun to use his own. John exhibits intense admiration for Kate, spontaneously proposing marriage and declaring ambitions to become "King of the Shadows House." His soot abilities manifest physically: "John Punch" generates close-range blasts capable of shattering boulders, while "John Shield" blocks attacks. Negative emotions cause his soot to emit like fireworks with a starchy texture.

Their partnership evolves significantly across events. During the Debut, John escaped confinement using his soot power and aided Emilico and Rum before reuniting with Shaun. He later punched Shaun to reverse brainwashing effects, restoring Shaun's true self. In the Kidnapping Arc, they cooperated with Kate's group to rescue Emilico; John used his soot power to create a safe landing for Kate and Emilico and received aid from a small black creature to escape. Shirley, later revealed to have survived as a morph, communicated with Rum telepathically via a ribbon form. Shaun occasionally adopts John's mannerisms, like using "aim for the top," reflecting their deepening synchronization.
