Description
Ichiru Kuga is a fictional character from the multimedia franchise Tsukino Talent Productions, specifically appearing in the anime TsukiPro the Animation as a member of the unit QUELL. He is the younger twin brother of Issei Kuga. Ichiru and his brother grew up in an orphanage in Hokkaido, and as a result of these circumstances, they did not attend high school, instead working at a production factory to support themselves. Their lives changed when they met the celebrity Shu Izumi during a press tour, who offered to take them to Tokyo and help them debut as idols under the TSUKINO talent agency, eventually leading to the formation of the unit QUELL with Eichi Horimiya.
Ichiru is characterized by a personality that is described as blindingly bright and free like an open flame, representing the half of intensity. He is the straightforward, competitive, and expressive twin, known for being quick to pick a fight. Unlike his brother Issei, who is portrayed as highly intelligent, Ichiru is often teased by others, including his peers, for being somewhat obtuse or simple-minded, though this is often attributed to an earnest and uncomplicated nature rather than a lack of capability. He is highly emotional and easily swayed by his feelings, which makes him quick to anger but also prone to crying quite easily. This emotional nature is most often triggered by situations involving his twin brother, whom he is fiercely protective of. Initially, Ichiru was very distrustful of strangers, as shown by his initial suspicion of his future unit leader, Shu, though he has since warmed up to him considerably. Despite his aggressive exterior, he has a strong aversion to silence and is known to be the biggest scaredy-cat in the agency, having a low tolerance for horror movies and haunted houses.
Ichiru's primary motivation stems from his bond with his twin brother, Issei. Because Issei is introverted and has difficulty navigating crowds and new people, Ichiru feels the need to be the protector. Growing up, he would frequently get into fights on Issei's behalf and always carried band-aids with him. This protective instinct extends to his role within QUELL, where he works to establish a place for himself and his brother in the idol industry. He is also motivated by a desire for simple pleasures that he lacked in childhood, such as his fondness for meat and desserts like cake, which he previously only received on his birthday. He also has a rivalry with Tsubasa Okui of the unit SolidS, frequently clashing with him due to Tsubasa's teasing nature, which Ichiru dislikes because it makes him feel like a child.
In the story, Ichiru serves as the fiery and emotional core of his unit, QUELL. His raw energy and impulsiveness often contrast with the calmer, more intellectual members, providing dramatic tension and comedic relief. His role is defined by his integration into the idol industry alongside his brother, adapting from a life of factory work to performance and training. His presence helps to ground the unit in a sense of familial loyalty and raw passion.
Key relationships define Ichiru's development. His most important relationship is with Issei Kuga. Despite Ichiru being the younger twin, he acts as the overprotective older brother due to Issei's introverted nature. The twins are extremely close, often doing everything together, including falling asleep in the same bed while holding hands. With Shu Izumi, Ichiru initially found him suspicious but has developed a trusting bond, particularly after Shu began frequently buying him cake simply for no particular reason, a gesture of care that touched Ichiru. With Eichi Horimiya, their manager, Ichiru shares a bond formed in the kitchen, as both are proficient in cooking and often prepare meals together, with Eichi frequently acting as a mediator to calm Ichiru down when he argues. His relationship with Tsubasa Okui is one of constant bickering and teasing, though there is a mutual respect that has grown over time, with Ichiru reluctantly admitting that Tsubasa is a good person underneath their rivalry. He also maintains a friendship with members of Six Gravity, such as Koi Kisaragi, based on a mutual love of reading and swapping manga volumes.
Ichiru undergoes subtle development from a distrustful and street-hardened youth to a more integrated and secure member of a found family. He learns to rely on his unit members, such as Shu and Eichi, rather than solely on his brother. While he remains hot-headed, he gains better control over his temper, and his growth is reflected in his physical changes, such as an increase in height over the years as he matures from sixteen into adulthood. His understanding of social norms and technology, such as saving money or using a smartphone, also develops gradually with the help of his peers.
Notable abilities of Ichiru include proficiency in cooking, which he developed in the orphanage and factory, allowing him to help prepare daily meals for his unit. He is physically active and enjoys exercise, as well as music and singing as part of his idol career. He also knows sign language, having learned it while still living in the orphanage with his brother. He has a love for reading manga and is able to discuss and swap series with other characters, as well as play online games. He is generally good at physical activities, including general exercise, but dislikes studying and has difficulty reading kanji or opening paper milk cartons.
