Description
Miki Kuroda, more commonly known by her nickname Miko, is a supporting character in the anime Devilman Crybaby. She is a high school student and a member of the running track team at Kamigaku High School alongside Akira Fudo and Miki Makimura. Miko is an athletic individual, noted as the second-fastest runner on the team behind Miki Makimura, who is a nationally recognized juvenile track runner. Her appearance is characterized by medium-length maroon hair and brown eyes.

In terms of personality, Miko initially appears as a fairly ordinary and competitive student. However, beneath the surface, she harbors deep-seated jealousy and feelings of inferiority toward Miki Makimura, who shares the same given name and outperforms her both athletically and socially. Miko struggles with self-worth and believes that there can only be one "Miki" worthy of happiness and attention. This jealousy is compounded by her unacknowledged romantic feelings toward Miki Makimura, which she is unable to express openly, partly due to societal pressures and internalized lesbophobia. As a result, she suppresses her emotions and seeks validation through unhealthy relationships, including one with a photographer named Nagasaki who sexually exploits her.

Miko's motivations are driven by a desire to overcome her rival and prove her own worth, but also by a deep need for love and acceptance. Her role in the story begins as a background figure in the track club, but she becomes increasingly important as the demonic threat escalates. When her jealousy reaches a peak, she becomes possessed by a demon and transforms into a Devilman. Unlike many who lose their humanity upon merging with a demon, Miko retains her human consciousness and will, allowing her to fight alongside Akira as a fellow Devilman. As a Devilman, her body changes dramatically: her skin turns brown, her eyes split into four, her hair stands on end, and large mandibles form around her mouth, giving her a spider-like appearance. In this form, she gains enhanced physical strength, speed, and combat abilities, as well as the power to spew liquid from her body as a weapon. She becomes arrogant and reckless, indulging in the raw power and newfound confidence, but this is a reflection of her repressed desires rather than a loss of her human core.

Key relationships define Miko's arc. Her rivalry with Miki Makimura is central, as she both admires and resents her. She is also close friends with Myuta, another track team member, whom she advises to content himself with watching Miki from afar—advice that mirrors her own resignation. Her relationship with Akira Fudo is that of a teammate and ally; after becoming a Devilman, she fights beside him against common enemies. Later in the story, she is captured and experimented on by humans who fear and hate Devilmen, which leads to her ultimate fate. In the climax, she and Miki Makimura finally confront their feelings for each other during the chaos of the human mob attacking them. Miko confesses her inferiority complex and her love for Miki, achieving a moment of emotional release and self-acceptance before her tragic end.

Miko's development is a journey from insecurity and jealousy to empowerment and sacrifice. Through her transformation and the trials she faces, she learns to embrace her identity and fight for those she cares about. Her story explores themes of envy, love, self-worth, and the monstrosity that can arise from suppressed pain, ultimately painting her as a tragic figure who finds redemption through honesty and courage.
