Description
Miki Kuroda, commonly referred to as Miko, is a supporting character in the anime series Devilman Crybaby. She is a student at Kamigaku High School where she is a member of the running track team alongside Akira Fudo and Miki Makimura. Miko initially appears as a friend and teammate of Miki Makimura, but she harbors deep-seated jealousy toward her. This envy stems from Miko feeling overshadowed by Miki’s natural talent, popularity, and close bond with Akira. Miko’s jealousy becomes the catalyst for her transformation when she willingly merges with a demon. Unlike many who are consumed by demonic possession, Miko retains her human consciousness and becomes a Devilman, a being with demonic powers and a human soul. Her motivation is a mixture of resentment and a desire to prove herself, but after her transformation she struggles with her new identity and the moral implications of her actions.
In the story, Miko initially serves as a rival to Miki and later as a reluctant ally to Akira. Her role expands as she, alongside Moyuru Koda and Akira, forms a small group of Devilmen dedicated to protecting humanity from the demonic threat. She participates in battles against demons and eventually faces the chaos unleashed by the global panic. Her development shows a shift from bitterness toward a grudging acceptance of her responsibility, though she remains emotionally scarred by her choices. In the final stages of the series, Miko is captured and subjected to experiments by paranoid humans, reflecting the tragic fate of many Devilmen at the hands of those they tried to protect.
In terms of abilities, Miko possesses the physical enhancements of a Devilman, granting her superhuman strength, speed, and durability. A notable power is her ability to release a corrosive liquid from orifices on her chest and lower body, which she uses as an offensive weapon in combat. This ability is particularly unsettling and underscores the grotesque nature of her demonic fusion. Personality-wise, Miko is depicted as insecure, resentful, and initially self-centered, but she displays moments of courage and a desire for redemption as the series progresses. Her key relationships include her rivalry with Miki Makimura, her uneasy camaraderie with Akira Fudo, and her brief alliance with Moyuru Koda. Her arc highlights themes of envy, identity, and the struggle to maintain humanity amidst monstrous transformation.
