ONA
Description
Moyuru Koda is a supporting character in Devilman Crybaby. He is a track athlete from Kawa High School who was known across Japan as a super highschooler after setting multiple youth records in track and field. Koda became a Devilman after being possessed by a demon at a Black Sabbath party, the same event where his boyfriend Junichi was killed during Koda’s transformation. Prior to his demonic merger, Koda had kept to himself because of accusations of illegal doping and the death of his teammate and lover. After merging with the demon, his athletic performance improved dramatically.
Personality-wise, Koda is initially portrayed as a reserved and emotionally fragile individual. He is deeply affected by Junichi’s death, often shown grieving and struggling with the violent loss. He tends to avoid conflict and seeks peace, which initially makes him hesitant to get involved in the larger battle between demons and humans. However, he is also kind-hearted and loyal, with a strong attachment to the people he cares about. His emotional vulnerability is a key part of his character, but it also drives his eventual sense of purpose.
In the story, Koda is outed as a Devilman by Ryo Asuka during a televised broadcast, which leads Akira Fudo to seek him out and recruit him. Koda becomes part of Akira and Miko Kuroda’s group of Devilmen who resolve to protect humanity from the demons and the chaos spreading through the world. Over time, his commitment grows, and he fights alongside the others despite his initial reluctance. His main relationships are with Akira, whom he comes to trust as a leader, and with the memory of Junichi, which continues to haunt him.
As a Devilman, Koda possesses enhanced physical abilities, including superhuman strength, speed, and durability. His track background suggests a particular emphasis on speed and agility. He is able to assume a monstrous hybrid form that reflects the demon he merged with. Throughout the series, Koda develops from a grief-stricken, withdrawn teenager into a more active and determined figure willing to stand up against the demonic threat, even as the world around him descends into violence and paranoia.
