Description
Chinatsu Morikawa is a central figure in the narrative of Lostorage conflated WIXOSS and its predecessor, Lostorage incited WIXOSS. She is introduced as a diligent honor student who excels in both academics and athletics, a young woman who appears to handle her challenging life with grace and strength. Behind this capable exterior, however, Chinatsu is under immense pressure. Her family’s financial situation collapsed when the company her father worked for went bankrupt, forcing her to work part-time jobs to pay for her private school tuition. This burden is compounded by the fact that she has been separated from her childhood best friend, Suzuko Homura, adding a layer of personal loneliness to her daily struggles. Chinatsu’s personality is defined by a fierce seriousness and a deep-seated hatred of losing. She is stubborn and has a habit of making unilateral decisions, such as ignoring her family’s financial reality because she is determined to stay at her prestigious school, a choice that often creates more problems for those around her.
Chinatsu’s involvement in the WIXOSS Selector battles becomes the catalyst for a dramatic transformation. Initially, she approaches the battles as just another task to complete, refusing to use her LRIG Mel’s coin ability, which allows her to manipulate the minds of other Selectors, because she wants to win through her own strength. However, as the pressures of her life mount—sliding grades, spreading rumors, and the threat of her father losing his job—she suffers two consecutive defeats, leaving her with only one of five memory coins. Facing the prospect of her own literal disappearance, she finally uses Mel’s power to secure a victory. This first win twists something inside her. Stimulated by Mel’s praise, which echoes words Suzuko once said, Chinatsu’s repressed emotions surface, and she begins to deny the value of her cherished memories with Suzuko, viewing them as a source of suffocating pressure.
This marks the emergence of a much colder, crueler personality. Adopting a sadistic demeanor, Chinatsu abandons her former principles and becomes a subordinate to Kou Satomi, a bookmaker who orchestrates Selector battles for his own amusement. In this role, she uses threats, coercion, and her skills to force other Selectors into signing contracts with Satomi, becoming an agent of despair. Her primary motivation during this period is to overwrite her painful past. She resents Suzuko for placing her on a pedestal as an ideal to be emulated, feeling that this expectation trapped her. She battles Suzuko with the explicit goal of erasing all memories of their friendship, believing that doing so will finally free her from her own perceived weakness. This internal conflict is mirrored in her LRIG, Mel. Mel was named after a couple mascot Chinatsu shared with Suzuko, and her personality was created from Chinatsu’s idealized memories of her friend. As Chinatsu spirals, she tries to treat Mel as a being separate from Suzuko, but Mel’s unwavering affection and encouraging words constantly remind her of what she is trying to destroy.
Her key relationships drive the entire arc. Her friendship with Suzuko is the primary emotional core, representing both her happiest memories and the root of her anguish. She also forms a twisted master-servant bond with Satomi, who manipulates her pain for his own goals, and she has significant interactions with other Selectors like Shohei Shirai, whom she betrays to further Satomi’s agenda. Chinatsu’s development culminates in a final, desperate battle against Suzuko. Pushed to her mental limit, she is forced to confront the truth beneath her rage. She realizes that she never hated Suzuko; rather, she hated her own weak self that had become so dependent on her friend’s admiration. In a moment of clarity, she admits she always liked Suzuko very much and willingly unlocks her Berserk state, accepting defeat. This leads to a tearful reconciliation, though the battle leaves its mark. While she survives, many of her staked memories fade, including those of Suzuko and the Selector battles. In the following season, Lostorage conflated WIXOSS, her role is reduced, but she is shown trying to rediscover those lost memories and rebuild her identity, eventually reconciling her past and looking towards a more hopeful future. As a Selector, her notable ability, channeled through her LRIG Mel, is a coin ability that can induce attacks or manipulate the actions of her opponent, a power she initially abhors but later wields with ruthless efficiency.
