Description
Hikari Kongō is a student who appears in the second season of the anime, belonging to the special advanced class at the same high school as Umaru Doma. She is characterized by a mysterious and enigmatic atmosphere, often being quiet and observing those around her before engaging. Despite her reserved nature, she possesses a sweet and somewhat childish side, particularly when it comes to her interests and the people she cares about.
Physically, Hikari is notably petite, even smaller than her classmate Kirie Motoba, with very long, flowing white hair that reaches past her knees. She is often seen wearing a distinctive diamond-shaped hair accessory and clothes with sleeves that are too long for her small frame, adding to her visually unique and cute appearance. A notable physical quirk is that her eyes can change to a pattern of double circles with a dot in the center when she feels nervous or is trying to intimidate Umaru.
One of Hikari's most prominent personality traits is her use of the onomatopoeia "guru" to accompany her actions, a verbal tic similar to that of another character, Sylphynford Tachibana. She is also highly observant and astute, being one of the few people who quickly deduces Umaru’s secret, lazy, and indulgent lifestyle at home. This discovery initially creates a sense of rivalry and unease between the two girls, as Hikari also competes for the attention of Umaru's older brother, Taihei Doma, whom she greatly admires.
Her backstory reveals she is the younger sister of Kanau Kongou, who is Taihei’s boss and friend at his workplace. Hikari's deep admiration for Taihei stems from her childhood, when he would visit her home and teach her things, such as the names of the stars and constellations. This led her to see him as an ideal older brother figure and motivated her to work hard academically so she could receive his praise. She lives in a large apartment with her older sister, Kanau, and her desire to connect with Taihei is a primary motivator for her actions.
Hikari's role in the story is initially as a mysterious rival to Umaru, but over time, she evolves into a close friend and becomes an integral part of the main group. While she struggles with social interaction and had few friends before meeting the Doma siblings, her relationship with Umaru gradually shifts from rivalry to a genuine friendship, with the two eventually calling each other by their first names. She also forms bonds with other members of the cast, including Nana Ebina and Kirie Motoba, effectively becoming the "fifth little sister" of the group.
In terms of abilities, Hikari is exceptionally intelligent and a top student, receiving an award for the best academic performance alongside Umaru. Her high grades allow her to attend the special advanced class, which has flexible attendance rules, meaning she often studies at home. Although she claims to have little experience with video games, she demonstrates a natural talent for puzzle and logic games. Another quirky but notable ability is her capacity to consume large quantities of sweets, like pastries and donuts, very quickly.
