Description
Kirie Motoba is a friend and classmate of Umaru Doma in the anime Himōto! Umaru-chan R. She is a student at Arayada High School and is recognizable by her petite stature, standing at only 139 centimeters tall, and her sharp, dark purple eyes. Her dark hair is typically tied in a high ponytail, with uneven bangs covering much of her forehead. Her school uniform is often paired with black tights or dark brown stockings.
Kirie’s personality is defined by a stark contrast between her intimidating appearance and her painfully shy inner self. Because of her sharp gaze and a notorious incident during her high school entrance ceremony where she was seen fighting an adult man, her classmates spread rumors that she is a delinquent. The reality is that she is extremely introverted and socially awkward, to the point where she can only communicate comfortably with small children. Her intense, hostile glares are actually a result of her nervousness and her deep admiration for Umaru, whom she has long wanted to befriend but could not approach.
Kirie’s role in the story becomes significant when she finds Umaru’s lost student ID and follows her home to return it. At Umaru’s house, she encounters Umaru in her lazy, indoor "Himōto" form, which she mistakes for Umaru’s younger sister, naming her "Komaru". Instantly captivated by Komaru’s cuteness, Kirie declares her her "Master" and begins visiting frequently to serve her and play video games. This relationship is the catalyst for her growth, as her friendship with Umaru and Komaru allows her to slowly break out of her shell and become part of the main group of friends.
Her key relationships are complex. Initially, she sees her classmate Ebina as a rival for Umaru’s attention, but they eventually become close friends. Kirie is the only one who becomes aware of Ebina’s romantic feelings for Umaru’s brother, Taihei, and wholeheartedly supports her. Kirie also has a combative but similarly competitive relationship with Sylphyn. At home, her dynamic is defined by her older brother, Takeshi Motoba, who is a colleague of Taihei. Takeshi’s overbearing and foolish antics annoy Kirie, often leading to her hitting him with a wooden sword. This behavior was the source of her intimidating reputation, but it is implied she does not truly hate him and was closer to him in childhood.
Over the course of the series, Kirie experiences notable development. She transitions from a lonely, misunderstood outcast to a valued friend. She becomes more open, learns to interact with Taihei without freezing up, and begins to use an online pseudonym, "Kirinrin," to share her interests. Her classmates’ opinions of her also improve following school events. Regarding notable abilities, Kirie is a highly talented athlete. She is a member of the swim team and has placed third in a metropolitan tournament. She also practices kendo and possesses surprising physical strength and agility. In contrast, she harbors an unusual talent for being unnoticeable, to the point of becoming practically invisible as a running gag. Despite her tough exterior, she has a soft spot for cute things and fish, and her dream is to become a picture book author.
