Description
Kanami Etou is a second-year middle school student at Minoseki Academy. She is thirteen years old, with short brown hair that she often ties into a small ponytail, light-brown eyes, and a height of 156 centimeters. Her typical appearance includes her school uniform, black thigh-high socks, and running shoes.

Kanami is defined by her cheerful, energetic, and overwhelmingly positive personality. She is a genuine kenjutsu enthusiast; her eyes are said to sparkle whenever swordsmanship is discussed, and she possesses a particular love for matches that allow her to see how different opponents devise their tactics. This deep passion for fighting can make her somewhat impulsive, often rushing headlong into a good battle against a strong adversary. Despite this eagerness, she maintains a strong sense of morality and is notably kind-hearted, often showing understanding even towards her enemies. Beneath her exuberant exterior, she is quite brave, strong-willed, and mature enough to recognize and admit her own mistakes, also possessing sharp observational skills and perceptiveness.

Her background reveals that she has a living father, an older brother, and a deceased mother who was herself a highly skilled Toji. This legacy serves as both an inspiration and a foundation for her own prodigious talent. She enrolled at Minoseki Academy and became close friends with her classmate, Mai Yanase, before the series' events begin.

As the central protagonist, Kanami’s journey begins at the national swordsmanship tournament held at the Origami family estate. After becoming the Minoseki Academy champion by defeating Mai, she is set to face Hiyori Juujou from Heijou Institute in the final match. However, when Hiyori suddenly attacks the head of the Origami family, Yukari Origami, Kanami makes the pivotal decision to help Hiyori escape, driven by a desire to continue their interrupted duel and having glimpsed an Aradama seemingly hidden within Yukari’s hair. This act sets the entire story in motion, as Kanami chooses to accompany Hiyori as a fugitive to uncover the truth.

Her key relationships are central to the narrative. Her bond with Mai Yanase is one of deep, supportive friendship, representing a dynamic between her energetic nature and Mai's more timid disposition. The most significant relationship is with Hiyori Juujou, which evolves from rivalry into a strong partnership built on mutual reliance. Kanami’s unwavering resolve to support Hiyori, even declaring her intent to carry half of Hiyori’s burden, is a major element of her development. Her actions also influence others, such as Sayaka Itomi, through their duels and encounters.

Throughout her journey as a fugitive and later as a member of the anti-Origami group Mokusa, Kanami’s character is tested and solidified. Her initial love for sword fighting matures into a driven resolve to protect her friends and confront powerful enemies, including the Great Aradama Tagitsuhime. Her willpower is described as immense, allowing her to continue fighting despite severe exhaustion, a trait that surprises even Yukari Origami.

In combat, Kanami is recognized as one of the strongest sword fighters of her generation. She is a master of the Yagyu Shinkage-ryu swordsmanship style, which focuses on reading an opponent's movements and thoughts to achieve victory. Her abilities extend beyond mere technique; she possesses immense speed capable of performing a Jin'i with near-infinite velocity, superior instinct honed from countless hours of training, and a keen intellect that allows her to analyze and counter her opponent's strategies in real-time. Her deep knowledge of kenjutsu enables her to identify different sword schools and styles by stance alone, and she can even incorporate their techniques into her own fighting. She is also highly proficient in maintaining Utsushi for extended periods. Her designated okatana is named Chidori, a shorter blade with a pronounced backward curve that leaves a distinctive white trail when swung.
