Description
Kenny Doyle is a character from the 2017 Netflix live-action film adaptation of Death Note, not from the original anime series. He serves as a minor antagonist and is portrayed as a student at the same high school attended by the film's protagonist, Light Turner.
Kenny Doyle is depicted as a violent and insensitive school bully. He openly steals from other students and beats them brutally, seemingly for his own amusement and without any clear or sympathetic motivation. He takes sadistic joy in his actions, often laughing or smiling while intimidating, robbing, or physically assaulting his peers. His behavior is also shown to include the harassment of female students.
His primary role in the story is to serve as the first test subject for the Death Note. After Light Turner comes into possession of the supernatural notebook, the Shinigami Ryuk encourages him to test its powers. Light is shown a scene outside the school where Kenny and one of his friends are assaulting a female student. Acting on curiosity and Ryuk's suggestion, Light writes Kenny's name in the Death Note, specifying "decapitation" as the cause of death. This results in a freak accident where a truck's extendable ladder swerves into Kenny, brutally killing him. This act marks Light's first killing and fully initiates his descent into becoming the vigilante known as Kira.
In terms of key relationships, Kenny Doyle has no meaningful connection to the main characters beyond being a despised figure at school. His actions indirectly create a minor confrontation with Light and Mia Sutton, but this is brief. His death shocks the student body, but the narrative focuses more on Light's reaction and the beginning of his partnership with Mia rather than on any grief for Kenny.
The character of Kenny Doyle shows no development or notable abilities. He appears in the film only to be killed off in its opening act, serving as a plot device to demonstrate the Death Note's lethal power.
