Description
Mail Jeevas, commonly known as Matt, is a supporting character from the manga and anime series Death Note. He was raised at Wammy’s House, the orphanage for gifted children in England that also produced L, Near, and Mello. According to supplementary material, Matt is considered the third smartest child at the institution and the third successor to L, after Near and Mello. His real name is Mail Jeevas.
Matt has a calm and relaxed demeanor, often seen smoking a cigarette and wearing a distinctive pair of goggles with a casual outfit. He enjoys playing video games and generally prefers staying indoors. This laid‑back attitude, combined with a lack of the intense drive that characterizes Mello and Near, is cited as the reason he ranks third in the line of succession despite his considerable intelligence. His primary motivation comes from his close friendship with Mello; he follows Mello’s orders without question and provides loyal support throughout their independent investigation of Kira.
In the story, Matt first appears during the second half of the series as Mello’s accomplice. He is tasked with surveillance, monitoring the activities of Misa Amane, as well as Mogi and Aizawa. He uses his expertise in technology and espionage to gather information and create tactical distractions. During the kidnapping of Kiyomi Takada, Matt throws a smoke bomb to divert her bodyguards, allowing Mello to seize her. Immediately after this distraction, he is confronted by the bodyguards and, despite carrying a concealed firearm, is overwhelmed and shot multiple times, resulting in his death. Mello learns of Matt’s death from a television news broadcast and is visibly affected, apologizing to him.
Matt’s notable abilities include technical proficiency with computers and surveillance equipment, stealth and agility for spy work, and tactical thinking in executing diversions. He is also shown to be comfortable handling firearms. His development within the narrative is limited by his short screen time; he appears in only a small number of manga panels and anime scenes. Nevertheless, his role underscores the dangers faced by those who oppose Kira and highlights the depth of Mello’s personal connections. The close bond between Matt and Mello, forged during their time at Wammy’s House, remains the defining relationship of the character, and his death serves as a poignant moment in the series.
