Live action TV
Description
Hitoshi Demegawa is the male reporter who works as a news anchor for Sakura TV. He is a short, heavy-set man with small eyes, dark-brown hair, a mustache, and yellow-tinted glasses. His background is that of a television journalist driven by a desire for ratings and public attention rather than ethical reporting. His personality is greedy, opportunistic, and shameless; he sees the Kira phenomenon not as a tragedy but as a chance to boost his show's popularity. He berates his staff for poor ratings and eagerly sensationalizes the Kira murders, treating the serial killer as a celebrity.

His primary motivation is self-promotion and financial gain. When the second Kira, Misa Amane, sends videotapes to Sakura TV, Demegawa approves broadcasting them live, thereby inserting himself into the Kira narrative. Later, after Kiyomi Takada becomes Kira's official spokesperson, Demegawa loses that role but continues to try to reclaim it. He eventually turns Sakura TV into a propaganda network for Kira, instructing viewers to report anyone who opposes Kira. He becomes a mouthpiece for Kira's ideology, spreading the message that those who try to catch Kira are criminals.

His role in the story is that of a minor antagonist who represents the sensationalist media. He serves as a tool for Kira to reach the public and manipulate opinion. He also provides a contrast to the more principled investigators. Key relationships include his rivalry with Kiyomi Takada over the position of Kira's spokesperson and his subservient connection to the Kira figure (first Misa, then later Light through Takada). He also interacts with the task force indirectly, as he broadcasts information that aids Kira.

There is little development in his character; he remains a shallow, self-serving figure throughout. His arc ends with the collapse of Kira's kingdom, after which he likely fades into obscurity. His notable abilities are his skill in manipulating public perception through television and his willingness to abandon journalistic integrity for the sake of ratings. He has no combat or investigative prowess, relying instead on media influence.
