Description
Hisui Hoshikawa is a main character in the Libra of Nil Admirari series. He is a young man of sixteen to seventeen years of age with chin-length blonde hair and a notable case of heterochromia, possessing one blue eye and one pinkish-red eye; his left eye changed color following the awakening of his special power. He is of mixed Japanese and Dutch heritage, a fact that has been a source of personal struggle for him due to the circumstances of his birth. His birthday is September 19th.

Hisui is known for his bright, cheerful, and polite demeanor. He carries himself with a seriousness and maturity that belies his age, often acting as a responsible counterpart to some of his more abrasive colleagues. He is well-mannered and consistently treats others with respect, particularly the protagonist, Tsugumi Kuze, to whom he is kind and friendly. Despite his generally affable nature, he harbors a deep-seated discomfort with matters of love and physical intimacy between men and women, a direct result of his traumatic childhood.

Hisui's background is the primary source of his motivations. He was born as an illegitimate child to Hiwako Hoshikawa, a woman from a fallen noble family who was forced to work in a brothel that catered to foreign clientele. He spent his early childhood in this environment. When he was about twelve or thirteen, he was forced to dress as a girl due to his feminine appearance, and a traumatic near-assault by a customer caused his latent power to manifest, producing sparks that frightened everyone around him. This event drew the attention of a man named Shiro Mozuyama, who sought to use Hisui as a test subject. Soon after, Hisui's mother disappeared, leaving behind a letter asking him not to look for her, leading him to believe he had been abandoned.

Resentful and wandering, Hisui was eventually found by Shiori Tokimiya, the leader of the Exploration Division of the Imperial Books and Information Assets Administration Bureau, known as Fukurou. Impressed by his abilities, Shiori invited him to join the organization. His primary motivation for joining Fukurou was to find a children's book written by his mother, which he believed held the key to understanding her abandonment. His role within the bureau is as a capability person who uses his unique powers to assist in their investigations.

Hisui’s key relationships significantly shape his character. He shares a close bond with his mentor, Shiori Tokimiya, for whom he has a notable weakness of gratitude. In the bureau, he frequently finds himself admonishing the blunt-mouthed Hayato Ozaki. He also enjoys teasing the stoic Akira Kougami alongside Hayato, and demonstrates a capacity for forgiveness, choosing to overlook Akira's betrayal after he helps save Tsugumi. His most important relationship is with Tsugumi Kuze. Initially shy and formal with her, he begins to develop romantic feelings as she helps him uncover the truth about his past. He becomes protective of her, even jealous when she spends time with others, and ultimately confesses his feelings after she accepts him completely.

His character development is centered on overcoming his painful past. Through his investigations with Tsugumi, Hisui learns the truth from Mozuyama and his mother's friend, Shouko Shiginuma: his mother did not abandon him. She sacrificed herself to become Mozuyama's test subject in his place to protect her son. Furthermore, he discovers a book written by his mother that contains an illusion of her, professing her love for him and her happiness at his birth. This revelation allows Hisui to let go of his self-loathing and resentment, finally understanding the depth of his mother's love. By the sequel, he has grown enough to begin pursuing his own interest in writing fairy tales, moving past the trauma that once defined him.

Hisui's notable ability is the power to generate and control sparks and flames. This special power is what classified him as a capability person and led to his recruitment into Fukurou. Unlike Tsugumi, who can simply see auras, Hisui has the ability to manipulate these fiery phenomena.
