Movie
Description
Dyce is a citizen of Industria and serves as the captain of the sailboat Barracuda. Born in the year 1993, he is thirty-five years old and works for Industria's trade bureau, where his primary mission is the collection of plastic. This task is of great importance to his society, as Industria processes this plastic to manufacture food like bread, solving its food problems.
Initially, Dyce comes across as a self-important and blustering officer, seemingly more concerned with his meals than with his command. He begins his role in the story as a comedic antagonist, acting as a subordinate to the primary villain, Lepka. True to this villainous start, Dyce is the one who kidnaps the heroine, Lana, from her home on High Harbor. However, this action was his own arbitrary decision and not a direct order from Lepka, who had only instructed him to locate Lana's grandfather, Dr. Rao. Because of this unauthorized kidnapping, Dyce is called to appear before Industria's council of elders for a hearing. He protests that bringing Lana could help secure Dr. Rao's cooperation, but his defense is unsuccessful. This event seems to be the beginning of his growing dissatisfaction with the Industrian leadership.
Despite his selfish and pragmatic nature, Dyce possesses a serious and capable side when it comes to his responsibilities as a sailor. His crew, while often disgusted by his unruly behavior, never abandon him and continue to follow his orders. They, and even members of the Industrian council, recognize that his character is not purely evil, just somewhat simple and rough around the edges. He also harbors romantic ideals, chasing after good food, beautiful women, and the lure of unknown lands over the horizon.
Dyce's primary motivation shifts dramatically during the story. Upon witnessing the true viciousness of Lepka's ambitions, he decides to betray Industria. He makes a passionate speech to his crew, declaring his hatred for Industria and its oppressive ways. He frames their rebellion not just as a betrayal, but as a quest for freedom, urging his men to share the pain, fight the storm, and sail together toward their dreams. He makes it clear that anyone who wishes to stay behind can do so, yet his loyalty to his crew is such that they almost unanimously choose to follow him. After this point, he becomes a crucial ally to the protagonist, Conan, and helps in the final confrontation against Lepka and his ultimate weapon, the Gigant.
Dyce is an exceptionally capable individual, particularly on the sea. He is so confident in his sailing abilities that he boasts even Industria cannot touch him in the water. His skill is demonstrated when he navigates the Barracuda through thick fog to escape his pursuers, issuing calm and precise orders to avoid obstacles while his enemies crash. Beyond his maritime expertise, he possesses impressive physical strength. He is shown running while firing a heavy machine gun, a feat requiring immense power and stamina. He is also one of the few characters in the series who manages to knock out the superhumanly strong Conan. Furthermore, Dyce has a knack for machinery, able to repair a long-submerged robonoid and pilot it expertly, as well as identify critical electrical components on a massive war machine to destroy it with a single blow.
Dyce's relationships are central to his character arc. His bond with his crew aboard the Barracuda is a unique blend of mutual annoyance and deep loyalty. He does not command through fear alone but through a shared sense of purpose and respect for the sea. His relationship with his superior, Monsley, begins with conflict and a mutual lack of respect, as she frequently overrides his authority. However, after siding with Conan, their dynamic evolves, ultimately culminating in their marriage. In the end, Dyce and Monsley hold a joint wedding ceremony and ship-launching for the newly repaired Barracuda, symbolizing a new beginning for them both as leaders of a new colony on Remnant Island.
Throughout the story, Dyce undergoes a significant development. He transitions from a self-serving, comedic villain and subordinate of Lepka to a hunted fugitive, and finally to a hero and trusted companion of Conan. Though Dr. Rao remains initially wary of him due to his past as a collaborator, Dyce proves his loyalty through his actions, using his insider knowledge of Industria to aid the group in their infiltration of the city. He ends the series not as a rogue captain, but as a married man and a founding leader of a new society, leaving his old life of rebellion behind for a future of rebuilding.
