Description
Lana is a central character in the post-apocalyptic anime series Conan, the Boy in Future. She is introduced as a quiet and soft-spoken girl from the surviving island community known as High Harbor, where a simple society has redeveloped in close contact with nature. At around eleven or twelve years old, she is the granddaughter of Dr. Lao, a brilliant scientist who once helped develop the solar energy technology that inadvertently led to the world's devastation. Lana is deeply devoted to her grandfather, and their bond is both emotional and telepathic.
Her personality is gentle and reserved, but she possesses a quiet inner strength. Despite her initially vulnerable position as a hunted individual, Lana shows immense bravery and resilience throughout her captivity and subsequent adventures. She is not merely a passive figure; she actively supports those she cares about and often refuses to give in to the threats of the industrial dystopia known as Industria. Her empathy extends to animals, especially birds, with whom she can communicate telepathically. She shares a particularly strong connection with a seabird named Tikki, who serves as her messenger and companion.
Lana's primary motivation is to protect her grandfather and prevent his knowledge of solar energy from being used for war and oppression. Because of her connection to Dr. Lao, she is pursued by the authorities of Industria, who wish to use her as a hostage to extract the secret of the solar power source. Her journey begins when she washes up unconscious on the shore of Remnant Island, where she is discovered by Conan, a boy who has never met anyone from the outside world. This meeting sets the entire story in motion.
Lana's role in the story is multifaceted. She serves as the catalyst for Conan's adventure, as he vows to rescue her when she is taken by Industrian agents. She is also the moral compass of the series, representing hope, innocence, and the potential for a peaceful future. Her telepathic abilities allow her to communicate across distances, enabling her to sense her grandfather's presence and, later, to send messages to Conan. These abilities grow stronger as the story progresses, and she eventually develops a limited telepathic connection with Conan as well.
Her key relationship is with Conan. From their first encounter, they share a deep, almost inseparable bond. Lana places complete trust in Conan, believing with certainty that he will survive any danger and come to save her. In return, she provides him with emotional and spiritual support, grounding him with her calm presence. Their connection is portrayed as pure and affectionate, evolving into a mutual love that endures through multiple separations and trials. Another crucial relationship is with her grandfather, Dr. Lao. Lana is fiercely loyal to him, and their telepathic link allows them to maintain contact even when they are apart. She also forms bonds with other characters such as Jimsy, Conan's wild friend, and eventually earns the respect of former adversaries like Monsley.
Lana undergoes significant development throughout the series. She begins as a hunted girl, a victim of political pursuit, but gradually transforms into a proactive leader and a symbol of hope for the survivors. She learns to stand up for herself and others, and by the end of the story, she actively helps bridge the gap between old technology and a sustainable future. Her transition from a damsel in distress to a brave young woman who risks her life for Conan and her friends is a central part of her arc.
Regarding notable abilities, Lana possesses a unique telepathic power that allows her to communicate with birds, particularly the tern Tikki. She can also sense her grandfather's presence and, as the story progresses, send telepathic messages to Conan. While she does not have physical strength like Conan, she is extremely capable for her age, often freeing herself from danger and helping others when needed. She never backs down when Conan is in trouble, showing a resilience that makes her a formidable ally. Her empathy and ability to connect with living things also extend to humans, touching the hearts of those around her and inspiring change.
By the end of the series, Lana matures into a confident young woman who, together with Conan, sets sail to build a new world that preserves the best of the past without repeating its mistakes.
