Description
Conan is the eleven-year-old protagonist of the story, a boy born on a remote island in the years following a catastrophic war that reshaped the Earth. He is the child of survivors from a spaceship that crashed on that small patch of land, and he was raised by his adoptive grandfather, the last remaining adult from that original group. Having spent his entire life in isolation with no other human contact, Conan grows up in a simple, rural environment deeply connected to nature and the sea.
Conan possesses an exceptionally strong and athletic physique, a direct result of his vigorous and demanding life on the island. He is a remarkably powerful child, capable of feats of strength far beyond what his size would suggest, and his agility allows him to perform actions such as clinging to sheer surfaces with only his toes. An expert swimmer and spear-fisherman, he is perfectly attuned to his natural surroundings. Despite his physical prowess and lack of formal education, Conan is also intelligent and quick-witted, able to solve problems and adapt to new situations with ease. His personality is defined by a fearless and determined nature. He is gentle and kind, yet possesses an unwavering resolve, especially when it comes to protecting those he cares about.
His sheltered upbringing means he initially has no social experience, and the first time he encounters a girl his own age, Lana, he is more curious than anything else. However, he integrates with strangers surprisingly well, forming bonds quickly due to his honest and straightforward character. Conan’s primary motivation is born from tragedy. When the militaristic society of Industria comes to his island seeking Lana, a skirmish results in the death of his grandfather and Lana’s abduction. This event forces Conan to leave his home for the first time, building a simple catamaran and setting off across an unknown ocean to rescue his new friend.
Within the story’s conflict between the pastoral life of High Harbor and the oppressive, industrial dystopia of Industria, Conan acts as the catalyst for change. His unwavering courage and selfless example have a profound effect on nearly everyone he meets, from the feral boy Jimsy, who becomes his first loyal friend after a brief rivalry, to the hardened Industrian soldier Monsley, whose loyalties begin to shift after witnessing Conan’s trust and bravery. His primary relationship is with Lana, for whom he feels a deep and protective affection that grows throughout their journey. He also shares a close bond with his late grandfather, whose teachings guide him. Throughout the series, Conan develops from an isolated, almost feral child into a mature and compassionate leader. He remains pure of heart and his actions are instrumental in overthrowing the tyrannical dictator Lepka, forcing a massive superweapon known as the Giganto into the sea, and ultimately helping to save what remains of humanity.
Conan’s notable abilities, aside from his immense physical strength and endurance, include his mastery of sailing, his skill with a fishing harpoon as a weapon, and his ability to hold his breath underwater for an exceptionally long time. He also prefers to go barefoot, finding shoes uncomfortable. His greatest asset, however, is his indomitable spirit and the simple, honest kindness that inspires others to change.
