Within the story’s conflict between the pastoral life of High Harbor and the oppressive, industrial dystopia of Industria, Conan acts as the catalyst for change. His unwavering courage and selfless example have a profound effect on nearly everyone he meets, from the feral boy Jimsy, who becomes his first loyal friend after a brief rivalry, to the hardened Industrian soldier Monsley, whose loyalties begin to shift after witnessing Conan’s trust and bravery.
